Kim,
I'm sorry but I don't believe your research applies for this Cates clan. You have
just mentioned that you are MATERNALLY Indian. You can't trace the "Cates"
clan through generations of females. We have to search PATERNALLY. If you've tested
your DNA, you are showing the haplogroup from FEMALE ancestry. ONLY a male can show both
maternal/paternal DNA ancestry. The Cates clan, is tested reliably through the MALE line
for obvious reasons --DNA and surname.
I am a Cates through marriage. My own genetics has NO bearing on the Cates bloodline. The
mtDNA I passed to my daughter is not "Cates"... My husband is a true Cates. He
carries the name AND the genetics that have been passed down from generation to
generation. His DNA/SURNAME is passed to his son. Only CATES males can carry this marker.
Up to 90% Irish/British share his DNA
I'm afraid your mother's DNA doesn't qualify for the Cates study. I am still
curious as to why you won't provide your haplogroup...
When studying one's family tree, we have to roll with the punches. I'm thankful
for DNA. It disproved the ridiculous claim that there was a paternal "indian"
ancestry on my Cates family line. I haven't heard anyone else on this board claim to
be paternally indian.

Yes we were tested. Yes its maternal line. No we are not related to your branch. Yes we
have fully researched our line. Yes I have offered it to this site. No thank you I do not
need my line resarched. And thank you for your time.> > If you go back to see my
posts you will see the names of the CATES line that is Indian. Sorry folks but SOME of the
CATES line is INDIAN. I only offered my suggestions to those who are unable to connect to
the Scottish/English CATES as an alternative for your research.> > Thank you so much

MANY surnames can come about through adoption, census mistakes, and even through the
mother. You would be surprised how many people test their genes and realize that they do
NOT share the same genetics as their ancestors (scandals/unwed mother's) etc. >

Native American ancestry with the Cates name. I'm assuming this is paternally? >

My husband knows nothing about his paternal grandfather. His dad's name is Milton
