I would hope to find out the siblings of my great, great, great grandfather,
thereby hopefully determining his father and mother's names.
Grandma told me that we were Scots-Irish. She was a Cates, and she may very
well have been talking about her direct lineage, speaking of her
grandparents and her dad's line. She also said we were part Cherokee, but I
have found no records of that information anywhere (yet).
The Kirk line, from what I've been told, were descended from Vikings (which
is kind of cool) but I'd think Kirk may be the Irish part of the Scots-Irish
she referred to.
Finding cousins online to my Cates family has been the most exciting and
enriching part of my research.
Hopefully, with connections found through DNA, we'll be able to make more
connections and help each other clear up some road blocks.

Subject: Study expectations
It would be helpful if y'all let me know what you're
expecting to find
and/or hoping to find from the Cate/Cates DNA project. It will enable me
to
report on those subjects as we go along. Clearly, you will have
expectations
concerning your specific lines. But beyond that, what are your greater
expectations?
For example:
One of the hypothesis of the study is that between 75% and 80% of the
Cate/Cates lines will match up to one another within <12 generations.
10% to 15% will match to one another > 15 generations and 10% will not
match
to any other line in the study.
Another, for example, is that:
Nearly 90% will match to the Clan Keith, or the Clan Kincaid (with
variations of spelling) of Scotch origin.
What are your expectations?
