Subject: [CATES-DNA] Cates NH/Maine
I'm excited about this group and it's potential.
My goal is to hopefully verify the link between Samuel Cates and James
Cate of Portsmouth, NH .
Samuel Cates, son of Joshua Cate , was born around 1722-1727 in either the
Falmouth area or Portsmouth, NH. He relocated to Plantation #5,
Harrington, probably in the 1760s.
In the 2008 May issue of The Maine Genealogist, an outstanding article was
written – “Samuel Cate of Falmouth / Harrington Maine”. This is a must
resource for anyone researching the Cates ancestry with roots from the
state of Maine. The article can be summed up best by quoting the last
paragraph - “We make no absolute claim to the identity of Samuel Cates'
parents. However, we believe sufficient evidence exists to establish that
they were not Edward and Jane (Jose) Cate and much more likely were Joshua
and Anne (Frost) Cate” The article has many convincing points and
interesting facts.
The confusion that has attributed to Samuel's parents has its roots in a
claim that in a “pigskin” account book that was kept by=2
0Samuel and later
by his son was believed to include Samuel’s ancestry. Those making that
claim went as far as to say that it claimed Edward Jr. was Samuel’s
father. We know for a fact that the “pigskin” account book did exist and
was seen last in 1967, however, its present location is unknown.
My hope is that my DNA can be compare with a known descendant of any
Cate/Cates mentioned in Edward Earle Cates and M. Ray Sanborn’s The Cate /
Cates Family of New England (Fredrick, MD., 1904)
I’m at the point were I am researching the tests and about to order one.
If any can give me advice or assistance I would greatly appreciate it.
My personal tree for reference can be found here:

I need to read the rest of the archieves, very interesting!!
