Hi,
Did I get back to you about DNA testing?? Or maybe Bruce did?? If not, sorry for the
delay...
If you have not already chosen a DNA company, let me wholeheartedly recommend the testing
at FTDNA.? Yes, it costs more, but you also GET more.? For one thing FTDNA was created by
genealogists and has some of the best features and communications around.? They have the
biggest database(Ysearch.org)--including?an established?Cates Project--and the most
markers available to test (67+++).? They keep your kit stored (unless you ask them to
destroy it) so any time new genealogically-useful markers are discovered, you can upgrade
without having to send in a new kit (many of my testees are in their 80's and 90's
and won't be around much longer to submit new samples).? They can help with your
Haplogroup & with autosomal testing, and are affiliated with the Genographic Project
(a project to map the world thru DNA that National Geographic-and? others-are
undertaking).? They will also tell you who you match within their tested?database &
give you that persons email addy (unless that per!
son has "opted out")!!!
Ancestry.com is VERY difficult to work with (communication, comparisons of results) and do
not have any upgrades available.? They do not store your DNA, nor do they have a general
database for comparison. The markers they test are not all useful for genealogy, and the
values they use are not compatible in some instances with other testing companies (have to
be "converted" to have relevance in searching public databases ie,
Ysearch.org).? They are businesspeople--in the business of collecting genealogical data
for free and then selling it to others.
I could go on, but the most compelling reason to test with FTDNA is that that's where
the Cates family project is!? As of this writing, we do not yet have anyone listing their
ancestor as Samuel or Ephraim--which means we need you as an anchor for that line!? You
may find people that you match within the project or establish your own line.? At present
we have 2 very distinct lines - which?appear to be?related to each other, and a number of
isolates who I'm sure would be pleased to find matches!
If you can, please test to 67 markers for best results.? (We have a few people who will
probably fall into group 1, but need more markers to be certain.)? Overall, it is cheaper
to order all 67 at once, but it can also be done incrementally as you can afford it.?
Watch for sales on upgrades (one just ended Saturday)!!
Feel free to write again with any further questions and see our website at:

Hope this helps!

Subject: [CATES-DNA] DNA choice?
Which is better
ancestry.com at $79 or FTDNA at $149? Am I getting the
same test and will I be able to compare between the two providers? I'd
rather pay the $79
