I do not descend from this family but I was intrigued that some of the names you mention
are similar to my Cater family so I attempted to find if there is any connection. I have
not found any as my Cater family is from South Carolina then moved to Alabama to Texas
whereas yours from what I found in the census records came from Mississippi to Arkansas to
Texas. The following is what I found in the census records. I hope it does not duplicate
your research.
In the 1910 United States Census in Tyler County, Texas (which borders Polk County) in
Enumeration District 160, page 219, Sheet 4A, Line 43, household #50, family #51 is a
James B. Cater and family as follows which contains your ancestor, Viola Cater:
Cater, James B., Head, male, white, age 63 years old, Married2-10 yrs, born Arkansas,
father born Mississippi, mother born Arkansas, Occupation: Farmer, General Farm
Cater, Mary L., wife, female, white, age 37 years old, Married2-10 yrs, born Alabama,
father born Alabama, mother Alabama
Cater, James W. (initial hard to read), son, male, white, age 8 years, single, born Texas,
father born Arkansas, mother born Alabama
Cater, Viola, daughter, female, white, age 6 years, single, born Texas, father born
Arkansas, mother born Alabama
Cater, Robert E., son, male, white, age 4, single, born Texas, father born Arkansas,
mother born Alabama
Cater, Rutha? B., daughter, female, white, age 2, single, born Texas, father born
Arkansas, mother born Alabama
In 1900, I think I found this man living in Red River County, Texas. He is given as J. M.
Cater. The entry is rather confusing for there is an entire family called Harris living
with him who are all listed as servants. He was listed in Enumeration District No. 104,
p100A, Sheet 11A, Line 27, household #183, family #185:
Cater, J. M., Head, white, male, Aug 1850, age 44 (sic), Widowed, number of years married:
30, born Arknasas, father born Mississippi, mother born Mississippi, Occupation: Farmer
Harris, M. P. L., servant, white, female, Aug 1856, age 43, Widowed, 5 children born, 5
children living, born Arkansas, father born Maryland, mother born North Carolina
Harris, Willie, servant, white, female, born Jan 1890, age 10, single, born Texas, father
born North Carolina, mother born Arkansas, Occupation: at school
Harris, Pollie, servant, white female, June 1892, 7, single, born Texas, father born North
Carolina, mother born Arkansas, Occupation: at school
Harris, Clayburn, servant, white, male, born June 1893, age 6, single, born Texas, father
born North Carolina, mother born Arkansas
Harris, Zora, servant, white female, born Dec 1898, age 1, single, born Texas, father born
North Carolina, mother born Arkansas
Finch, R. C., servant, white, female, Oct. 1874, age 25, single, born Texas, father born
North Carolina, mother born Arkansas, Occupation: servant
In 1880, he was again in Red River County, Texas with a wife and daughter, Viola. His age
is given as 23 but given that his wife is 28 and he has a daughter age 9, this appears to
be an error. He is listed in Enumeration District No. 1011, p226D, sheet16D?, Line 18,
household #157, family #157, as follows:
Cater, J. M., white, male, age 23, married, Occupation: Farmer, born Arkansas, father born
Mississippi, mother born Mississippi
Cater, E. M. white, female, age 28, wife, married, Occupation: Keeping House, born Ten,
father born Illinois, mother born Illinois
Cater, Viola, white, female, age 9, daughter, single, born Ten (ditto marks), father born
Mississippi, mother born Illinois
Barnet, E. M., white, female age 50, mother in law, listed as both married and widowed,
born Illinois, father born Mississippi (ditto marks), mother born Illinois
I could not find him in 1870, but in 1860 I found him in the household of James M. Cater
in Titus County, Texas listed in Mt. Vernon Precinct No. 1, p166, sheet 59, line 28,
household #380, line 380, as follows:
James M. Cater, age 35, male, stock raiser, Value of personal property: $160, born
Mississippi
Malinda Cater, age 30, female, born Alabama
James B. Cater, age 12, male, born Arkansas
George W. Cater, age 10, male, born Arkansas
Martha Cater, age 7, female, born Arkansas
I found him in 1850 in Hempstead County, Arkansas listed in Canuse Township, p231, line
37, household #26, family #26, as follows:
James Cater, age 24, male, Farmer, born Mississippi
Nancy P. Cater, age 35, female, born Mississippi
James B. Cater, age 2, male, born Arkansas
Geo. W. Cater, age 1, male, born Arkansas
Sarah Parker?, age 52, born Tennessee
Martha D. Parker?, age 16, female, born Louisiana
From the above it would appear your Viola Cater, born 1903, was the daughter of a James
M. (and/or) B. Cater born c1848 in Arkansas, and granddaughter of a James M. Cater born
c1825 in Mississippi.
John Caskey single, born Texas, father born North Carolina, mother born Arkansas,
