Message Board Post:
Trying to research a Jacob Cater who showed up in Hornell New York (Steuben County) in the
1850 and 1860 Census.
According to the 1855 New York State Census he was born in Dutchess County around in 1789
and had been living in Steuben Co. for 9 years.
I've run across conflicting sources, Some records the family name is DECATOR and
others it is just CATER.
He was married to a Mary (surname unknown) and had 4 children:
Abram Cater
Eber Cater- born abt 1834 in Oneida Co. NY
Elizabeth Cater- born abt. 1839 in Seneca Co. NY and married an Ephraim ANDRUS and had one
son Edward ANDRUS
Margaret Cater- born abt. 1842 in Onondaga CO. NY married Charles Norton and died in
Springwater NY in 1897
James Cater- born abt 1844 in Seneca Co. NY. I believe he fought in the Civil War and
survived it.
Any of this sound familiar with anyone?
