Baptist Indexes at Wake Forest
The Z. Smith Reynolds Library on the campus of Wake Forest University
in lovely Winston-Salem, North Carolina has been building a marvelous
collection of North Carolina Baptist records for years, and through
the magic of the World Wide Web, now allows some preliminary searches
of these records by researchers anywhere in the world.
The online access currently includes searches in two indexes. The
Baptist Church Records Index is an alphabetic listing of Z. Smith
Reynolds holdings, arranged by the name of the church. Each entry
here gives the name and location of the church, the time period
covered, and the size of the collection. Each also has a short
summary of the type of information available from that congregation
and a reference number.
Also available is a personal name index to individuals mentioned in
the pages of the Bibilical Recorder. This index is divided into four
chronologic groupings: 1834-1839, 1845-1846, 1992 and 1993. Each
entry here has the full name as it appears in the Bibilical Recorder,
the date it appeared, and a reference number allowing you to locate
the original edition of the Bibilical Recorder in which the name
appeared. In some cases, the names include a notation of the context
in which they appeared in the Bibilical Recorder.
While there is an email link included allowing you to contact the
staff of the library, if at all possible you will want to visit the
campus yourself. Not only will this give you the opportunity to
become familiar with the wonderful collection of Baptist records in
the Z. Smith Reynolds Library, but you will also be able to enjoy one
of the more beautiful regions of the United States.
