This is what I have on John of Surry & Wilkes Co. There is no
documentation that shows he is a son of Capt. Robert Cate, however,
we believe is and that he and Charles were probably brothers. William
of Jefferson Co. TN is the only probably child I have. Do you have
any others? Some of the Surry Co. records of this John have been
confused with those of John son of Charles.
Anyone have anything else on this John?

(1) John (Preacher) Cate, son of Robert Cate, Capt. and Elizabeth,
was born about 1736 in NC, and married before 1760 in Orange Co., NC,
(2) Catherine.

BIRTH: based on John being 21 in 1760 when he was originally deeded
476 acres on both sides of Cain Creek 30 Jul 1760.
1768 John and his wife, Katherine, deeded land in Orange Co. NC to
Robert Cate, May 12, 1768, 200 acres on both sides of Cain Creek
being part of a tract containing 476 acres conveyed to me by Deed
from Lord Granville dated 30 Jul 1760. Signed S/John Cate, Katherine
(X) Cate, Wit: S/Richard Holeman and S/Wm Blalock. Proved 1770 by
Richard Holeman. (This is Robert Cate III, John's brother. Their
father died in 1767.) Orange Co. Deeds, AGLL V156-59, Pg. 376.

Joseph Murphy, shallow Fords meeting house in Surry Co. NC.
1772 "History of the Baptists of North Carolina", by Morgan Edwards,
describes the Shallow Ford church on the Yadkin river. "So called
from one of the small fords of the Atkin river, near to which the
meeting house stands, in the county of Surry, 300 miles NW of Newburn
& 560 miles from Philadelphia. The church consists of three branches,
one near the ford where is a place of worship 30 feet by 26, built in
1769; another in the fork of the Atkin, another in the Mulberry
fields. ruling elders, laying on of hands are here admitted, but
stand devided about washing feet &c. No estate, no salary except
presents, labour &c., to the amount of perhaps L20. the minister is
Rev. Joseph Murphy, who has to his assistance Messers. David Allen,
JOHN CATES, David Chapman... The society hath increased from 32 to

1777 Wilkes County was formed from the western half of Surry County,
NC.
Surry County NC Land Entry 710, Pg. 94 Samuel Hinds enters 50 acres
in Surry County on the end of the Fox Nob including the improvement
formerly belonging to JOHN CATES - Sept 14, 1778 - Warrant granted 12
Oct 1788. Caveated by Baxter Davis, returned to Court. (From Ruth
Cate, Knoxville, TN)
1778 Surry County NC Land Entry 719 - Micajah Lewis for Joel Lewis in
military service of US 250 acres on Waters of Deep Creek including
JOHN CATES plantation 14 Sep 1778 - 12 Oct 1788. Caveated by Benjamin
Lewis, returned to court - Jury found for Lewis - warrant granted.
1779 Surry Co. NC Joseph Wintson's Entry Book; JOHN CATES enters 200
acres in Surry County on deep Creek of Yadkin. No dates given.

From 1779 on the records for Preacher John Cate & those of John
Cate
son of John's brother Charles are hard to tell which belong to which
John Cate. Those that have Manard & Lawrence connections probably
belong to John son of Charles.
Ruth Cate says she believes John and Catherine died in Wilkes County,
NC & did not go to Tennessee.
1789 Deed from William T. Lewis to Humphrey Cockerham 50 acres in
Surry County on south side of Fox Nob adjcent where Cockerham now
lives, and taken out of a tract including JOHN CATE's old plantation
head waters of Deep Creek. Wit: James Downey & John McConnal. 26 Oct
1789.
I have no further records on John Cate.RBP
