Dear Cate/Cates researchers:
Do any of you live in the Orange County, NC area and would you be willing
to do a look-up in the deeds of Orange County? Or do any of you know of a
competent researcher in Orange Co., NC?
I'm trying to locate a deed made between Sarah PIGG and John CATE in 1828.
The deed was proven in open court on 1 Jan 1828 in Maury Co., TN (where
John lived), but was not recorded there. The deed was for 40 acres of land
(place not stated) and the court ordered the deed registered. Somehow or
other it wasn't. Witnesses for the deed were John W. CATE and Stephen
SMITH.
We think by this deed Sarah PIGG, nee CATE, transferred to her brother John
CATE, the forty acres of land which devised to her from her father William
CATE's estate in 1803.
In 1825 the following deed was made and recorded in Orange Co., NC.
"1825 John Cate of Murray County, Tennessee, and Hannah Cate Berry of
Orange County, deeded to Thomas Wilson of Orange County, for $150, 2/5 of
their settlement of 200 acres belonging to WILLIAM CATE, deceased, father
of John, Hannah, Sally, Benjamin and Charity Cate. WILLIAM CATE died in
1803. Witnesses: Chuza Hopkins and Josiah Wilson.
19 November 1825" (from Banks CATE)
Banks Cate informed me that he did not have access to the deeds of Orange
Co., NC after 1826. Need to find the deed whereby Sarah CATE BERRY PIGG
sold her 40 acres of the William CATE estate in order to prove that Sarah
CATE BERRY PIGG was William's daughter. It is possible that Sarah's 40
acres were transferred to Thomas WILSON of Orange Co., NC, but it would
appear that Thomas WILSON died in 1828.
The reading of the information supplied by Banks would indicate that there
was a lawsuit by which the land of William CATE was divided, or else one
was pending in 1825. Anyone got any suggestions or willing to do some
courthouse digging?????
