DOCUMENTATION ON WILLIAM P. CATE, JEFFERSON CO. TN
by Roberta Pierson & Ruth Cate
(1) William P. (Billy) Cate, son of John (Preacher) Cate and
Catherine, was born about 1760 in Orange Co., NC, and married about
1778 in Surry Co., NC, (2) Mary Enyard, daughter of John Enyard and
Mary, who was born about 1762 in NC. William P. (Billy) died 15 Jun
1842 in Bradley Co., TN. Mary died about 1835 in Bradley Co., TN.
Surry County NC Land Entry 1734 - William Lewis enters 200 acres near
the Waters of Deep Creek including the improvements of William Cates
(no dates given but Sep 1779 dates on the page). Info from Ruth Cate,
Knoxville, TN. (Joseph Winston's entry Book) (NOTE: William would
have to be 21 to own land. Is this our William, he would have to be
born abt 1758? RBP)
John Cate and John Enyard have property on Deep Creek in Surry County,
William married Mary Enyard about 1779.
I have no records for William from 1780-1789. (There are 2 surveys in
Washington Co. VA in 1787 where a William Cate was Asignee for John
Cate and James Creason. This is probably not this William.RBP & Ruth
Cate.)
NOTE: Silas Enyart had a survey of 200 acres in Washington Co. VA 21
Feb 1784. Entitled to by actual settlement made in the year 1771.
Washington Co. was formed in 1776-7.

1804 Minutes of the Dumplin Creek Baptist Church, Wm. Cate & Humphrey
Mount delegates to the Beaver Ridge Meeting to see if they can help
reunite the church. Nov. 1804.
1805 Minutes of the Dumplin Creek Baptist Church, Wm Cate complained
against Isaac Newman Sr. for stopping the force of note that Bro
Newman had sold. Church did not agree on the matter and it was laid
over. 11 Jul 1805. rec'd a group of delegates from these churches
Forks of French Broad to help settle the Isaac newman and Wm Cate
dispute. Isaac Newman justified in stopping the note and not censured.
10 Aug 1805. Matter of Isaac Newman and Wm. Cate laid over. Nov 1805.

committee about forming a church at Daniel Hull's place. Oct 1808.
1811 Minutes of the Dumplin Creek Baptist church, Bro John Cate & Bro
Kinbrough to cite William Cate to next meeting to give reason for
neglecting attendance. 9 May 1811. William Cate excluded for
neglecting to hear the church 11 May 1811.
1813 Jefferson County Court Minutes, March Session, P. 104, Dianah
Stropes aged fifteen comes into court & choose William Cate her
guardian who entered into bond with Chany Moore & Ebenezer Leith has
secured in the sum of one thousand dollars for the faithfull
discharge of his duty therin.

William went to McMinn Co., TN along with many others from upper East
Tennessee to take advantage of the fertile land offered through the
Hiwassee Purchase. McMinn Co. was formed in 1819 from Indian Lands.
1823 William Cate of Jefferson Co. deeded to John Cate of same, for
$200, 197 acres on the waters of Dumplin Creek on the Cedar Branch.

and he went to Bradley County, according to "Bryans, Hortons & Allied

Cate family. I have in my notes "William
Cate was adm. for Nathaniel Witt's estate, 6-5-1826." I got this from
Elizabeth Cate Manly's book. Do you have any more on this? I don't know
what county it was in.
