Subject: CATES research in Forsyth Co. NC area
Searched the Wake Forest library for CATES this week-end. To use
their
catalog,
http://www.wfu.edu Once on the site, choose Academic
Resources ;
then Library Services ; then OWL-online Wake library ; then logon as
WAKE ; hit return twice. I used #7 subject searching under BAPTISTS
NORTH CAROLINA.
In their Baptist Room, they have constitutions of most of the
Baptist
churches in North Carolina. Most of these include membership rolls.

Cates, John Brereton - b. England ; d. Sierra Leone, 23 July 1819.
CMS
missionary to Sierra Leone. CATES trained as a schoolmaster at the
Central School of the National Society before volunteering to go to
Sierra Leone with the CMS. He was sent to Wilberforce on Jan 14,
1817
traveling out with DAVID BRENNAND and died after 2 1/2 years of
service,
considerably longer than Brennand who died after 6 months. He appears
to
have been unmarried. Few of the early CMS missionaries lasted as long
as
he. (cited in: D.T. B(arry), CMS Register of Missionaries and Native
Clergy. London. 1906)
Wake Forest also has the family papers of JAMES WESLEY CATES
(1847-1918). These are in 17 cartons. He was of the Burlington NC
