Hi Folks,
Sydney really got the discussion going didn't he? I have
discussed this with Roberta once or twice, while searching for my
elusive gggg grandfather, James F. CATES of SC or NC. So I turned to
looking at variations of spelling, and I am still looking.
Depending on the nationality, education, and the penmenship of the writer,
the spelling can vary (pronunciation, sounds like, etc.). As CATE written
or printed in small case letters, "C" can be a "K" and the
"e" can very
easily become an "o". CATE = KATE or KAT or KATT or CATO or KATO CATES =
KATES or KATZ or CATOS or KATOS or CATOR and so on.
For example, when I write my last name, my "o" and "a" look like
"o",
my "n" sometimes look like "r". Some times people write my with 2
t's
and 1 n. STANTON becomes STONTON or STORTOR or STATTON etc.
Check out the CATO Web Sites.
Oh, by the way, I have not fogotten about making posting to the
list from "History of the CATES Family" which is excerpts from the book
Cate-Cates Family of New-England". I have had a major crisis with my
computer. Even though I uninstalled Windows 98 Beta 3, the Beta System
files enhancements remain on my hard drive, and Windows 95 encountered
one of those Beta enhancement and crashed big time. Windows 95 put DOS
7.0 operating system on my hard disk, Windows 98 put DOS 8.04 Beta
operating system on my dard disk. The result is that I can't restore my
backup files. So through a lot of manipulations (for 5 days), I have
managed to get Windows 3.1 to barely run (very slow and limited).
I will start posting on Monday.
Have a nice day,
Don Stanton
