This is John Cate Sr. who was an early settler of Dumplin Valley in
East Tennessee. Mary is sometimes said to be Mary Lawrence. I have
never seen any data that would document Lawrence as Mary's surname.
Does anybody have anything on this issue?
I'm assuming that this Mary Lawrence was the daughter of Thomas Laurence and
Lucy Womack of Wilkes County, NC. After Thomas' death, Lucy moved w/ the
family to the Dumplin Valley, and later died in McMinn Co., TN in 1859. I
don't know much about their daughter Mary, but their daughter Lucy Lawrence
married Charles Cate, Jr., and they were also early settlers of Dumplin
Valley. Thomas and Lucy's son James (and I believe their son William) also
moved to the area about the same time.
The LDS Ancestral file for the family indicates that Mary died 24 May 1857
in Adair County, MO. I haven't had time to chase down whether this is
accurate or not, but maybe starting in Adair County might lead you back to
something. I don't have any actual documentation of anything about her
marriages or later life, but maybe the LDS submitters do.
The submitters of the LDS information are listed as:

I hope this helps.
