| ISAIAH CATES/KATES (b. circa 1817 in Tennessee/North
Carolina;
| d. early 1860's in southwest Missouri) married NANCY SHELTON (b. circa
1823
| in Tennessee; d. circa 1895 in McKinney, Texas) circa 1841. It is
believed
| they were in the Giles County, Tennessee area at this time. Nancy was
the
| daughter of William (b. Missouri/Virginia) and Mary (b. circa 1793 in
| Virginia) Shelton. By the 1850 census, they had moved 60 miles northwest
to
| Perry County, Tennessee, a county split in half by the Tennessee River,
but
| moved to Franklin Township, Dent County, Missouri, a journey of 250 miles
| to the northwest across the Mississippi River, circa 1854 where the
family
| resided during the 1860 census. In the late 1850's, Isaiah was reported
to
| be a doctor/farmer in southwestern Missouri. He supposedly was making a
| house call one night and was stranded in a snowstormhis horse becoming
| entangled in a wire. He was found the next morning and later contracted
| pneumonia and died. His gravesite is as yet unknown. In the 1870
census,
| Nancy, George, Isaiah Jr., Joel, John, Elizabeth and Nancy's mother, Mary
| Shelton, were again in Dent County (Franklin Township, Salem), Missouri.
| In the 1870's, the family relocated once again to Young County, Texas, an
| even-longer trek of over 500 miles to the southwest. They had seven
| children named Margera (Margaret) Ann, Sarah, George, Isaiah Jr., Joel,
| John Conley and Bette Elizabeth.
