Sampson Cate and Lennah Cate had nine children, they lived in Norris
Township on 1850 Census.

The Cates were among the earliest settlers of Edgefield County and its
Saluda region. In 1818 William Cates purchased 62 acres from Robert
Cates at remote Cloud's Creek. After Williams death in 1831, his sons,
Sampson and Wiley continued farming the land.
Sampson Cates died 25 June 1854.
Phillip Cates married Elizibeth Bodie 11 November 1855, that lasted for
55 years.
Elizabeth's father Joseph Bodie-Mother Jane Bodie, they were neighbors
to the Cates.

Phillip Cates was employed by James Reynolds at Butler Springs, Alabama.

Both Philip and Hiram Cates were in the 36th Alabama Volunteer Infantry,
at Mount Vernon Arsenal by Col. Robert H. Smith.
On April 27, 1862 they enlisted for three years.
They were assigned to Cap. Malcolm Pattersons company G comprised of
Monroe County men., Phillip stood 6 feet tall Hiram was 5'12 1/2 feet
tall. etc..
