I looked to see what I had for the lineage of Clifton Bledsoe Cates
and below is what I have:
ANDERSON CATES
First Generation
1. Anderson1 Cates was born in Orange County, North
Carolina 9 Nov 1810.
He married twice. He married Emily Peacock in Obion
County, Tennessee, 13 Aug 1848. Marrige license dated 5 Aug
1848, Obion Co., TN. Marriages of Tennessee by Sistler.
He married Susan Box in Obion County, Tennessee, 15 Dec
1850. Marriage license dated 8 Dec 1850, Obion Co., TN.
Marriages of Tennessee by Sistler. Susan is the daughter of
Joseph Box and Siney Harris.
Anderson Cates was on the first grand jury of Lake County,
TN. He came from Orange County, NC where he married Susan
Box. He attended the University of Knoxville and then settled
in Lake County, TN. He had 2 sons, Council P. and Ruben
Cates. (Tennessee Cousins, a book)
Anderson Cates and Susan Box had the following children:
2 i. Robert Lee2 Cates.
3 ii. Thomas J. Cates.
+ 4 iii. Sue Cates.
5 iv. Charley Cates. Charley died. Infant daughter
who died in infancy.
6 v. William I. Cates. William died in Obion County,
Tennessee. Died at age 28.
7 vi. Council P. Cates. He married Annie Darnall.
+ 8 vii. Reuben Anderson Cates was born 3 Dec 1857
+ 9 viii. Kate Lou Cates (Twin) was born 18 May 1860 and
died 8 Aug 1953.
+ 10 ix. Willis Jones Cates (Twin) was born 18 May 1860
Second Generation
4. Sue2 Cates (Anderson1) birth date unknown.
She married Charles Andrew Lewis.
Sue Cates and Charles Andrew Lewis had the following
children:
11 i. Harry3 Lewis.
12 ii. Ruby Lewis.
13 iii. Albert Lewis.
14 iv. Charles W. Lewis.
15 v. Louise Lewis.
16 vi. Mayme Lewis was born circa 1888. Mayme died in
1992 at 104 years of age.
8. Reuben Anderson2 Cates (Anderson1) was born 3 Dec 1857.
He married Lulu Inez Craig 1 Mar 1882. Lulu was born 23
Jan 1863.
Reuben Anderson Cates and Lulu Inez Craig had the following
children:
17 i. Opal Deane3 Cates was born 12 Jan 1883. Opal
died in 1960 at 77 years of age. She married
John Thomas Price 22 Dec 1904.
18 ii. John Obrey Cates was born 8 Dec 1885. John died
19 Jan 1887 at 1 year of age.
19 iii. Katie Cates was born 4 Jun 1888. Katie died 12
Dec 1892 at 4 years of age.
+ 20 iv. Charles Craig Cates was born 15 Aug 1892 and died
19 Feb 1933.
9. Kate Lou2 Cates (Twin) (Anderson1) was born in
Tiptonville, Lake County, Tennessee 18 May 1860. Kate died 8
Aug 1953 at 93 years of age.
She married Joseph M. Wright (Dr.).
Kate Lou Cates (Twin) and Joseph M. Wright (Dr.) had the
following children:
21 i. Joseph M.3 Wright Jr..
22 ii. Phillip A. Wright.
10. Willis Jones2 Cates (Twin) (Anderson1) was born 18 May
1860.
He married Martha Virginia Bledsoe.
Willis Jones Cates (Twin) and Martha Virginia Bledsoe had
the following children:
+ 23 i. Katherine Nell3 Cates.
+ 24 ii. Clifton Bledsoe Cates was born 31 Aug 1893 and
died 6 Jun 1970.
Third Generation
20. Charles Craig3 Cates (Reuben Anderson2, Anderson1) was
born 15 Aug 1892. Charles died 19 Feb 1933 at 40 years of
age.
He married Helen Holt Kilbride 25 Aug 1915. Helen was born
25 May 1895, in Bay City, TX.
Charles Craig Cates and Helen Holt Kilbride had the
following children:

26 ii. Helen Elizabeth Cates
27 iii. Patricia Wright Cates
23. Katherine Nell3 Cates (Willis Jones2, Anderson1) birth
date unknown.
She married James Thompson Prothro (D.D.S.) in Tiptonville,
Lake County, Tennessee, 3 Oct 1917.

THOMPSON PROTHRO, D. D. S. - On the 3d of October, 1917, at
Tiptonville, Lake county, this state, was celebrated the
marriage of Dr. Prothro to Miss Katherine Nell Cates, a
daughter of Willis J. and Martha (Bledsoe) Cates, both of whom
are living. To their union one child has been born: James
Thompson, Jr., who is twelve years of age.
Katherine Nell Cates and James Thompson Prothro (D.D.S.)
had the following child:

24. Clifton Bledsoe3 Cates (Willis Jones2, Anderson1) was
born in Tiptonville, Lake County, Tennessee 31 Aug 1893.
Clifton died 6 Jun 1970 at 76 years of age.
He married Jane Virginia McIlhenny 7 Oct 1920.

bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation
of Germany, Marine Corps Expeditionary, Yangtze, China and Am.
services, Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal with 5 bronze stars
(U.S.), Legion of Honor, Croix de Guerre (3) with 2 palms and
1 gold star, Fourragere (France), Commander of the Order
Orange of Nassau with Crossed Swords (Netherlands). Member of
Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Alpha Delta. Club: Army and Navy,
Army-Navy Country, Alfalfa (Washington); Chevy Chase. Address:
Quantico Virginia. Died June 6, 1970.
Clifton Bledsoe Cates and Jane Virginia McIlhenny had the
following children:

....... This is practically all that I have on his lineage and I am not
certain that this is completely accurate. I welcome any additions,
corrections or comments. Can someone connect this Anderson Cates to the
Orange County, NC Cates lines????
