I've been looking for further information on my gg grandfather, Charles
Claiborn CATE for years to no avail. I have some info on descendants,
but nothing on ancestors or siblings other than his brother Tom,
mentioned below. Connected to MOUNT family, also. If any of the
following info rings a bell, I'd love to hear from you! Thanks!

Husbands Notes...
Charles came to TX in 1859 and worked on a ranch in Denton Co, TX for
about a year before settling in Cumby, TX. His farm was in Hunt
County. His father had a water-powered grist mill back in TN, possibly
(but not necessarily) in McMinn County. Charles' brother Tom CATE had
the first store in Black Jack Grove, now Cumby, TX. The Cate family
farm sat on the Hopkins/Hunt County line.
The US Census for Hopkins Co, TX in 1870 shows Charles as having a
grocery business and in 1880 as a farmer. [Info from a letter to
Dorothy (Ray) Via from David Bays, 1984.] I don't know when he became a
doctor. In this census, both Thomas and Charles are listed at Black
Jack Post Office.
Tom Cate was born in ca. 1825 presumably in TN. Charles C. Cate was
born in 1839 (based on dying at age 61 in Feb 1900, according to obit).
The 1870 census shows both Thomas and Charles at the Black Jack post
office. Census also shows Tom in grocery business in 1870.
On 7-5-1861 Charles Claiborn Cate enlisted in the Cavalry, a member of
Company K of the 9th Texas Infantry, which became a part of the Ross
Brigade which fought in AR, MO, and east of the Mississippi River.
Sue Brazell (my cousin, daughter of Dorothy Catherine Ray Via) told me
that Charles Claiborn Cate was of Jewish ancestry but the family hushed
it up, and that the name was originally Cattes. (Note added on
12-23-1998: Recently on the Cate mailing list, there have been two or
three mentions of a Jewish Cate/Cates/Cattes background, possibly
lending credence to the above.)
Charles' brother Tom went "back to Arkansas to bring back Charley
Mount's body." Charley Mount was killed in the Battle of Elkhorn, AR.
Charley Mount was Tom's friend, business partner, and first cousin.
Charley was engaged to be married and his fiance was heartbroken. She
never married and visited his grave either daily or weekly for the rest
of her life. Tom was married and had one child, Laura. I don't have
his wife's name. Tom Cate was buried in Cumby Cemetary. (Speculation:
Is this Charley Mount the Charles Claiborn Mount who was the son of John
Mount and Sarah Cate who ended up in Wise Co, TX?)
(Whoever this Charley MOUNT is, he was a first cousin to Charley CATE,
father of Dr. W.R. Cate, according to Jesse Garrett who had raised a
company of Texas cavalry during the Civil War and had written notes on
some of his officers, including Charley Mount.)
POSSIBLE CLUE: On the Cate mailing list 11-15-1998, there was a
reference to a Cate/Mount connection. John Mount m. (1) Sarah Cates in
Jefferson Co, TN. She was the dau of William CATE and Mary Enyard and
(2) Sarah Cates, dau of Charles Cates & Lucy Lawrence. John d. after
1860 in Larissa, Cherokee Co, TX.
(Note added 1-11-1999 - I'm now sure that there was a Cate/Mount
connection and Charley may have been Charles Claiborn Mount, son and 7th
child of John Mount and his first wife Sarah Cates. Charles Claiborn
Mount was born in 1829 in McMinn Co, TN; died in Civil War. He was a
2nd Lt., Co. K, 9th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Sim's Regiment, 4th Texas
Cavalry, CSA). He entered the service Oct. 14, 1861 at Camp Reeves, TX
at the age of 30 years. The company muster roll for March and April
1862 lists him as killed in action at the Battle of Elkhorn on March 7,
1862. He never married.
OTHER POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS: On Ancestry World Tree, I found Charles
Cate, son of ___________, m. Rachel Thornborough (dau. of Richard
Thornborough and Margaret "Peggy" Chase) on 9-7-1826 in TN. Also on
Ancestry World Tree (Internet), John Henry Cate son of John Cate &
Rachel Pierce m. Cora ________ and had Charles Cate and (Martha?) Cate
(no dates or places given on the latter group).
Wifes Notes...
Genia Cate lived with her Aunt Sue (Susan Elizabeth Sayle) for a time
after her (Genia's) mother died in 1888.
