Elizabeth Estridge, was born about 1780/1784 in Orange Co., NC, and

of the family of Preacher Thomas Cate.)
MARRIAGE: 7 Oct 1803, John Bailiff, Bondsman, "Orange County Marriages

Ephraim went to Christian Co. Kentucky with the Lindseys where his twins
James & Ephraim were born in 1810 and then Tennessee.
1810 Federal Census for christian county, Kentucky - Ephraim Cates age
16-26, 3 males age 0-10, 1 female age 16-26, 1 female age 0-10.
1811 Christian County, KY Tax List - ephraim Cates, 170 acres on waters
of LaRu.
1 Apr 1812 - Thomas Cate signed his will in Orange County, North
Carolina. He named his wife Sarah, his sons Moses, John, EPHRAIM and
Thomas, his daughters Fanny Sykes, Martha Moore, Winny Sykes, Milly
Roach, Huldah Cate, Tabitha Smith and Elizabeth Cate. His land was not
described: but he left 150 acres to Moses where he now dewlls, 159 acres
to John where he now dwells, 100 acres to EPHRAIN wheron he did dewll,
100 acres to Thomas wheron I now dwell after the death of his mother,
100 acres to Sarah wheron I now dwell, and after her death or widowhood
to son Thomas. He left his three negroes named Randol, Joe and Rachel to
wife Sarah, as well as his mill smith tools, wagon and horses, two
stills with their utensils, household furniture, farming tools, cows,
hogs, sheep..all to be divided between his eleven children after her
death. No executor was named. Witnesses: Barnard Cate and Jean Cate.

Thomas Cate; Dec which he left to his wife in his last will & testament
duringe her natural Life or widow hood but she having more property than
she wishes to bee encumbered with she has given up to be sold & divided
among her 10 children: Moses, John, Thomas, Ephram, Francis, Martha,
Winy, Millie, Hulda & Tabbitha.

days at a murder trial for two slaves accused o killing his neighbor,
Nancy Purdom. Ond of the slaves was named Felix.

to square out his original grant, registered in Mountain District Grant
book J, Pg. 236. Sworn chain Carriers were William Charles and Ephraim
E. Cates. Next to this grant lived William Charles. William Charles
later lived near Ephraim E. Cates in Illinois.

Cates Witness. Walter Brixey was a surveyor and among his sketches, is
one of Ephraim Cates' place.
17 Oct 1848 - Federal Land Sales in Hamilition County, Illinois -
EPHRAIM CATES SEN., 80 acres @ $1.25, Sec. 6, Twp, 4S, Part E2SE.
Ephraim E. Cates Sen. resided in Hamiliton County, Illinois at the time
of purchase. This land was adjacent to land that James Lindsey Cates
bought on 8 Feb 1837 in next section.
1850 - Hamilton County Illinois deeds - EPHRAIM CATES Sr. and his wife
Rebecca sell the forgoing land to Ephraim Estridge Cates for $125. The
James Lindsey Cates land (40 acres) lay between Ephrain Estridge Cates
land (40 acres) and the Ephraim Cates Sr. land (80 acres.)
3 Sep 1850 - 1850 Federal Census for Madison County, Missouri, Pg. 233,
Dwelling 528, Family 528 - EPHRAIM CATES, farmer age 71, Rebecca age 56.
Rebecca Lindsay was raised on a farm on the Haw River that had been
purchased from Thomas and Elizabeth Fussell Cates, son of Capt. Robert
Cates. Conflict: some say Rebecca was the daughter of her mother's
marriage to Peter Brewer, son of Sackfield Bewer. (Apparently Peter
Brewer died circa 1782 and Rebecca could not then be his daughter.Al
Baumbach)

Alfred Lindsey, also a well-know minister, lived among a group of these
people in Tasewell Co. Illinois. The Hoskins & Dillion element of this
group migrated to Kansas and still maintain a Meeting. I have an old
history of this family and it is remarkable to read names today of
