I'm interested in the Cate/s families in the Maury County TN area. There
were two Ezra Cates I can identify from the censuses:
1. Ezra Cate was on the 1824 Tax List.
There was an Ezra Cates on the 1830 Lawrence County TN Census. He was age
30-40 (b.1790-1800).
2. Ezra Cate appeared in the 1850 Lawrence County TN Census, age 27 (b.ca.
1823 NC). His wife was Martha Pickard whom he had married in 1846 TN.
Apparently
this Ezra died ca. 1853: Will Book 3.129 Lawrence County. In 1858 one
Martha
A. Cates m. Asa Carrell - probably widow of this Ezra Cate.
I'm aware of Roberta Pierson's posting on Ezra Cate, s/o Thomas "Road"
Cate
and Elizabeth Fussell, who went to Amite County MS before 1820. He would
have been older than the above men. However, from Latter Day Saints material
and other sources, I've learned that Ezra s/o Road Tom had a brother named
Isaiah (m. Jane O'Daniel). Isaiah died in SC ca. 1800. I believe Jane may
have come to Lewis County TN and lived with a daughter Susannah (m. Sandy
Duke). I believe Isaiah and Jane had a son named Ezra b. 1795 who m. 1819
OCNC Eleanor Thompson. So, I am interested particularly in Isaiah and Jane
and their children. Or any other of Road Tom's descendants who might have
gone to Maury Co TN.
My questions: Is anyone working on Ezra Cates? There were not many Ezras
among the Cate/Cates. Can anyone tell me with certainty that this Ezra b.
1795 was the s/o Isaiah?
Also, are these other children correct for Isaiah and Jane: Nancy; Aaron;
William; Elizabeth b. 1802; Susannah?
Bottom line: I'm looking for the parents of Goodwin Cate b. 1802 NC. She
and her husband Peter Lamb were in Maury County TN in 1824. Peter was on the
tax list for that year and not far from him was one Ezra Cate. I'm trying to
determine if Ezra could be the brother to Goodwin. Goodwin is the only name
we've ever had for her. Being unusual one wouldl think she would be easy to
locate. Not so. She would fit well into Isaiah's family where Elizabeth is!
Does anyone have any information on Elizabeth? Goodwin was born in NC so
I'd be interested in knowing where Isaiah's children were born.
Goodwin and Peter Lamb named a daughter Martha Ezrabella. I'm hoping this is
a clue. They also named a daughter Nellie/Ellen, perhaps for Ezra's wife
Eleanor Thompson.
I've tried to go back through all the old postings on the Cate/Cates Lists to
see if I could find someone working on this family. Nothing found so far.
Can anyone help with Goodwin? With Ezra b. 1795?
