(1) Richard Cate, son of Robert Cate, Capt. and Elizabeth, was born
about 1730 in Prince George Co, VA, and married (2) Emelia (Milly) who
was born about 1735. Richard died before Feb 1794 in Orange Co., NC.
Emelia (Milly) died after 1811 in Orange Co., NC.
5 Aug 1754 Richard & Joseph Cate designated to work on road in Robert
Cate's District, Thomas Cate Sr. was overseer from Camp Branch to
Western Path.
13 Aug 1765 Orange Co. Ct. of Pleas & Qtr Sessions: John Cate, Jr. to
Richard Cate, Sr. 235 acres. Sales. Ack. by James Bowie.
5 Nov 1765 Richard is given the Plantation house in his father's Will.
1 Mar 1771 Robert Tenning to Richard Cate, 356 acres on the sought side
of Caine Creek about a mile above the Piney Mountain, from a deed by
Alexander Mebane from deed by Earl of Granville on 13 Nov 1756.
1779 Orange Co. Tax List: Richard Cate, 3962, listed together with
Thomas Cate, Joseph Cate, John Cate, and Thomas Cate.
23 Jan 1779 Richard Cate & Lewis Kirk were named executors of the will
of Malchi McDaniel, who named his wife Margaret as legetee.
20 Apr 1781 Richard Cate, Lewis Kirk, Jesse Roper & "brother Charles
Thompson" were named executors of the will of Amos M. Thompson, who
willed all of his lands in Dunwood Co. VA, to his brother Charles.

490 acres, 1 free poll & 4-5 black polls.
1782 Orange Co. Ct. of Pleas & Qtr Sessions Richard Cate and John
Edwards, Jr., were appointed by the Court to divide the estate of Peter
Brewer.
1782 Richard Cate and Charles Thompson qualified before the court as
administrators of the estate of Amos Thompson.
1783 Richard Cate, Sackfield Brewer, Henry Hastings and others were on
the jury.
1784 A deed from Thomas Moore to Richard Cate for land on Cain Creek was
recorded by the Ct. of Pleas & Quarter Sessions.
10 Nov 1784 - State of NC to Richard Cate, 100 acres on Cain Creek
adjacent Joab Durham, Robert Cate, William Moore.
1784 Orange Co. Ct. of Pleas & Quarter Sessions: Richard Cate has leave
to build Grist Mill on his own land.
1785 - state versus Michael Ferney. Jury sworn: Rich'd Cates, Jno.
Cates, Jno. Strother and others.
13 Aug 1785 Lewis Kirk to Richard Cate, 10 acres on the waters of Cain
Creek, including his mill seat, part of tract granted unto Thomas Lindly
and then to Lewis Kirk. Wit: Barnard Cate, Thomas Cate.
1787 - Sheriff summons jurors: Richard Cate, James Ball, William Morrow,
John Tinnen and other.
12 Aug 1789 Thomas Durham to Thomas Cate, preacher, Thomas Cate, Robert
Cate, John Strother, RICHARD CATE, John Workman, Barnard Cate, Joseph
Cate, Mary Christmas, trustees, one acre for building a meeting house.
Wit: Thomas Basket, Mark Cooper.
5 Nov 1790 - Samuel Strodwick to Richard Cate, 327 acres on both sides
of New River or Cain Creek, Durham's Branch, Odaniel's corner on
Catterpillar branch. Wit: W. J. Strodwick, Barnerd Catte.
22 Nov 1790 Richard Cate & Richard Largraves witnessed the deed of
Samuel Strodwick to Barnard Cate of 160 acres on Hogg Branch of Cain
Creek or New River, on John Cate's line.
4 Nov 1791 - Thomas More to Richard Cate, 431 acres on the west side of
Cane Creek or New River, adjoining the lands of said Cate, at the mouth
of Caterpillar Creek, on the bank of straight branch, adjoining James
Bal's Meadttow. Wit: Barnard Cate, Ru Quinic, Junior.
23 Jan 1772, Ben'n Lacy and Rich'd Cate witnessed the deed of John
Spurling and Mary Spruling to Lewis Kirk for land on the south side of
Cain Creek & on the north side of Haw River above the pyane Mountain, by
the said creek, a tract granted to Thomas Lindly by Earl Granville 11
May 1757.
28 May 1793 - Orange County Court Minutes, AGLL V156-63, Richard Cate
was appointed guardian of Edward Edwards.
23 Aug 1794, Lewis Kirk to James Kirk, son, 30 acres on the south side
of Cain Creek on the north side of Haw river adjacent John Strothers
line, RICHARD CATE's line, part of tract to Lewis Kirk by John Cates on
11 Feb. 1782. Wit: Parham Kirk, John Oliver.
Feb 1794 PROBATE: Richard's Will is probated in 1794 in Orange Co. N.C.
in Will Book A or B-259. Named his 9 children James, Jesse, Richard,
Thomas, John, Martha Hastings, Susanah, Emilia and Benjamin. Sackfield
Brewer, brother John Cate & son James Cate Executors. Wit: Bernard Cate
& Lewis Kirk.
1794 Amelia (Mrs Milly Cate) was named guardian of Benjamin (idiot).
1794 Caswell Dist., Orange Co. Tax List, Sackfield Brewer - 1015 1/2
acres, Sackfield Brewer for Richard Cate's orphans 408 acres.

1820 Orange County Census, NA 33-82, Pg. 306, John Cate 26-45, 4 males
0-5, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 0-10 and 1 female 45 &
over. (The female over 45 is probably MILLY) Listed near Richard Cate.
1826 John Cate, son of MILLY Cate, to Thomas Clancy, 268 acres on little
Cane Creek, a tract which his mother Milly Cate, has her life estate in
and wheron he now lives.
