I am interested in your email.
My GGGrandfather,Isaiah Cates Day, b. 1812, was buried in Dayton Texas in
the Bryan family grounds. I was asked why and thought it because he was the
founder of the city and it has a central location.
When his first wife, Rachael Whitlock died, the Kendall Bryans took his
children until he remarried My grandmother of that time, Martha Caroline
Munson Pruitt Orr .
After seeing this , I wonder that these Cates may be related to Mary Cates
who was his mother. I do not know his fathers name, but they were from
Shelby Co Tn. Came to Texas in the early eighteen forties or late thirties.
I would appreciate any information your llist people might have on this
line. Dayton Texas is named for Isaiah C. Day.

Subject: [CATE-L] Ida Bell Cate Line
Elizabeth Cate Manly's "Bryans, Hortons, and Allied
Families" gives the
following for Ida Bell Cate.
"Thomas Allen Bryan, b. 19 Aug 1859; d. July 1930
m. Ida Bell Cate, 1897. She was b. 27 Nov. 1877; d. 22 Dec 1922.
She was the dau. of Elisha Porter & Mary Jane Drinnen Cate, of Elisha
and Mary E. Newman Cate, of John Cate, Jr., of John Cate, Sr. - another
Bryan-Cate intermarriage."
I wonder if anyone could confirm this line for Ida Bell Cate for me?
Thanks in advance.
By the way, working the problem in the other direction from John Cate
forward (the John Cate whom ECM says is John Cate Jr.), this is the
line which I believe leads to Ida Bell Cate. Any corrections
gratefully accepted.
John Cate (who may be John Cate Jr. ???)
John Cate was married to Mary Ann Koontz. (The name is given as Mary
Ann Coons and as Mary Knootz in the LDS files. I believe the most
likely correct spelling is Koontz.) John Cate and Mary Ann Koontz had
the following children:
I. Elisha Porter Cate Sr. was born on 11 Oct 1795 in Jefferson
County, Tennessee. He died on 17 May 1876 in Jefferson
County, Tennessee.
Elisha Porter Cate Sr. was married to Mary Elizabeth Newman on
21 Jul 1821 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Mary Elizabeth
Newman was born on 14 Dec 1800 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.
She died on 11 Oct 1872 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Elisha
Porter Cate Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Newman had the following
children:
A. Elisha Porter Cate Jr. was born about 1828 in Jefferson
County, Tennessee. Known as Porter.
Elisha Porter Cate Jr. was married to Mary Jane Drinnen.
Elisha Porter Cate Jr. and Mary Jane Drinnen had the following
children:
1. Ida Bell Cate was born on 27 Nov 1877 in Tennessee. She
died on 22 Dec 1922 in Tennessee. She was buried in
Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
Ida Bell Cate was married to Thomas Allen Bryan on 18 Apr 1897
in Sevier County, Tennessee. Thomas Allen Bryan was born on 19
Oct 1855. He died on 13 Jul 1930 in Tennessee. He was buried
in Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
(As one more "by the way", I have recently visited the
Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery. Unless I am misreading it, the birth date
on the grave marker for Thomas Allen Bryan is 19 October 1855. So
that's the way I am showing it in my data base.)
One final point on Ida Bell Cate's line: her grandmother, Mary
Elizabeth Newman appears to be descended from Cates as follows:
Mary Elizabeth Newman is the daughter of Joseph Newman and Catherine
(Caty) Cate, and Caty Cate is the daughter of William P. Cate and Mary
Enyard.
