Hi all,
I have run into a brick wall trying to locate the parents of my
gggrandfather, James Cates.
The 1850 Federal Census for Union County, Illinois, Dwelling 672, Family
672 lists James Kates (Cates), farmer age 45 North Carolina, Martha (2nd
wife) age 34 Tennessee, Monroe, farmer age 15 Tennessee, Nancy age 14
Illinois, Martha age 12 Illinois, Franklin age 11 Illinois, Columbus age
7 Illinois, Caroline age 2 Illinois.
This would indicate that James Cates was born around 1805 in North
Carolina. There are 6 Cates individuals listed in the North Carolina
1810 Federal Census:
Caleb Cates in Currituck County on Page 85
males @ 30110 & females @ 20101 Others / slaves @ 0 2
Leon Cates in Lincoln County on Page 76
males @ 00010 & females @ 01010 Others / slaves @ 0 0
R. Cates in Orange County on Page 138
males @ 00301 & females @ 42010 Others / slaves @ 0 0
Richard Cates in Caswell County on Page 468
males @ 11010 & females @ 20010 Others / slaves @ 0 1
Robert Cates in Chatham County on Page 210
males @ 00100 & females @ 10100 Others / slaves @ 0 0
Robert Cates Sr in Person County on Page 136
males @ 01101 & females @ 00010 Others / slaves @ 10 1
The first entry is for children under 10 years of age. James Cates
would be about 5 years old in 1810. Therefore, assuming his father
still lived in North Carolina in 1810, only 2 of the above 6 individuals
meet the criteria: Caleb Cates and Richard Cates.
There is a Matthais Cates listed in the North Carolina 1790 Federal
Census for Orange County (roll #2 on page #96). James Cates' middle
name is suspected to be Matthais. Therefore, Matthais Cates & James
Cates may be related. A book entitled, "First Census of the United
States" lists Matthais Cates in St. Mary's District of the Hillsborough
District of Orange County. There are also listings for Richard Cates,
Benjamin Cates, William Cates & Lazarus Cates.
A will dated March 4, 1816 for Matthais Cates is filed in Persons
County, North Carolina. It is more of an inventory and auction record
than a will. The inventory is dated June 6, 1815. It lists Joshua
Cates, Charles Cates, Solomon Cates, William Cates and other non Cates
individuals who purchased items from Matthais Cates' estate. Every item
of his estate is listed including numerous farm tools, animals,
furniture and numerous household items.
Is anyone familiar with Caleb Cates, Richard Cates, or Matthais Cates of
North Carolina in time period of 1790 to 1820? Any information that
anyone might have would be greatly appreciated!
