Further messages to Charlie Ward who was asking about the father of his
Joseph Cates b. 1808 North Carolina have bounced. My husband thinks that
the next generation for Charlie is Timothy. See message below that has kept
bouncing twice. Perhaps he has limied mailbox capacity or has a filter that
is blocking the message because it was working earlier in the day/weekend.

Dear Charlie,
This message back to you bounced the first time. Trying again. Either I
typed your e-mail address wrong or your box is full or something.
Yes, I finally got to the Cates Cousins page. Not sure how to use it at
all yet, but my husband is working on it. I was leaving out the underscore.
Yes, my husband has information on Joseph Cates b. c. 1808 in Orange
Co., NC. My husband, Dan, has furnished the following information. He
writes in the body of the e-mail and then I have to do the rest. He does OK
on the word processor WORD program, but still has not mastered e-mail and
the internet very well:.)
I have placed this Joseph as a likely son of Timothy b.ca. 1780 Orange
Co., NC who married Betsey Pratt Nov 1806 in Orange Co. It has been awhile
since I made this connection. This is the Timothy that served in the War of
1812 from Orange Co. NC. He moved to TN sometime after his service. Do not
know exactly when. He had several first cousins that also settled in the
Bedford area and nearby counties. He was not on the 1820 census of Orange
Co. but showed 1830 Bedford census.
I made the tie of Joseph m. Edna Kirk (b. ca.1808 d 4 Dec 1854 in
Green Co. MO) here in question with Timothy by placing Joseph S.(28 Sep 1812
d 30 Sept 1889), with Thomas Sykes who married Martha Hastings. That Joseph
S. and his wife Sophia are buried in the Hastings New Hope Cemetery. Thomas
Sykes was also of Bedford Co. Thomas Sykes was the son of John Cates of
Orange. But that is another story.
Timothy died Mar 1860 in Franklin Co., TN. This is the Timothy that was
named in the will of Benjamin-2 of Eno R., Orange Co., NC. Ben-2 was b. ca
1750 d. 1798. Ben -2 was son of Ben-1 b.ca 1710. Ben-1 is considered to be a
brother of John and Joseph of the Flat River in 1749.(I am convinced there
were two sets of brothers in Orange Co. prior to 1750, but that too is
another story.)
My notes indicate there were 4 Joseph Cate/Cates living in Bedford Co.
that were b. in the 1805-1815 period.
Another Joseph (b. ca 1813 d after the 1880 census of Bedford ) is a likely
son of Ephriam a son of Richard of the Eno R. This Ephram is listed in the
will of Richard in his will of 26 Mar 1806. Richard was a son of Ben-2. He
was b. in TN
At this time I do not recall the fourth Joseph of Bedford Co. but is in my
files somewhere.
My research of Timothy allowed me to break the barrier between NC and
TN. Timothy was the only Cates of his era with that name. It was a nice
break from John, Thomas, Joseph, and Robert!
My conclusions, of course, are subject to error. I certainly could have
them mixed. That's where interested folk should always verify with their own
research. Please let me know if you think I am wrong or right.

Were you able to access the site?
also, do you have any information regarding the parentage of Joseph Cates,
born about 1808, in Orange Co, NC, who married Edna "Edney" Kirk in Bedford
Co, TN?
My cousin and I think it was Thomas, due to his proximity to family members
Duham (parents of Edna's mom) and Kirk's.
Thanks.
