There are two ways that this can be approached.
The first and most useful is to locate a male from a parallel line of which
you know the relationship. For example: You know that "john Cate" is the
GGGrandson of your GGGrandfather's brother. You can then work from a
position of calculating relationships with that distance in mind.
The second but less accurate is to study the mtDNA from Y-DNA study members.
If you search through the "Family finder" application, you will begin to see
reoccurring family names through the mtDNA. This will give you good
indications of the female partners of a given male line. You can work
backwards from there. It's complicated and requires good documentation but
it does work.
