Early Virginia Marriages and Obituaries
Bernard Henley was a reference librarian at the City of Richmond
Public Library for 37 years, and a man with a deep interest in the
history of Virginia. One of the fruits of that interest was his
compilation of over 45,000 marriage records and obituaries from
Virginia newspapers, especially those gazettes published in and near
Richmond. While most of the entries in this database fall between
1780 and 1830, some entries are dated as late as 1876.
Thanks to the Virginia State Library system, family and local
historians now have the privilege of searching this database online.
The index can be searched by keyword (like the name or locality),
subject, or title. Results of successful searches are displayed as
linked lists with a brief abstract of the pertinent data and links to
further information, allowing you to locate th newspaper entry from
which the data was extracted.
Even if you don't find the names you're looking for in the database
you'll want to look at the list of newspapers on which Bernard Henley
based his index. This list is more than just a reference for Henley's
work, it is an invaluable resource for anyone whose research leads
them to the contemporary history of Virginia as recorded in its
newspapers.
