Hello folks. I want to share with you what I found in Tennessee last week.
Please let me know if you find a hole in my theory about my great
grandfather U. Riley Jonathan Cates being a Cate, grandson of Gideon Cate,
son of Christopher C. Cate and Lutitia Russell.
Riley Cates was born in McMinn County Tennessee in 1865. He married Addy
Callie Watson in Monroe County Tennessee December 1885. They moved to
Orangeville, Fannin County, Texas soon after their marriage, and there they
had 5 children. Callie Watson Cates died of TB in 1900. She is buried in
Porters Cemetery.
Riley moved to Whitewright, Grayson County, Texas (just a few miles from
Orangeville). In 1910 he married Phoebe Ellis Mayo. They did not have
children.
Riley died at his home in Whitewright in 1931. His obituary supports that he
moved to Texas soon after his marriage to Callie, that he was orphaned, and
that Rev James Sterling Russell was his uncle on the Cate side of the family.
Also that he was survived by children, a brother, W. M. Cates of Knowles
California, and a half sister, Mrs. John Crabtree.
What we wanted to do on the trip was to find the parents of Riley Cates and
establish a link between Cates and Cate, and I think we did. I thought that
the marriage license would be a critical piece of evidence and it was.
Trip Notes:
1. The marriage license is for U. J. Cate and Callie Watson. Some
researcher say it is for W. J. Cate and Callie Watson, but comparing the W in
W J and the W in Watson show that they are not the same letters. The
handwriting for both entries is from the same person, all other letters
compare favorably.
Other facts about the license are that A. J. Coltharp was the witness and
partner with Riley in the $1,250 bond and that J. S. Russell, MG married them
9 December 1885.
2. While looking for marriage licenses I found one for Mrs. Low (or Lou)
Cate and W. D. Caldwell, married 18 Feb, 1871 in McMinn County.
Her first marriage was to C. C. Cate 13 June 1858 McMinn County.
She is listed on the 1870 McMinn County Census as head of house as Low
Cate/34 with Lizzie/11, William/9, and Riley/6.
Chancery Case Number 943 refers to Thomas J. Russell and his children and
their children. "......; 5. Lutitia Caldwell deceased 1875 who by first
husband C. C. Cate deceased had Lizzie Cate deceased who's son is Robert
Cate, Uriley, or Riley, or U. J. C. Cate of Texas, and William or Bud Cate
disinherited by grandfather, and by last husband Ada Caldwell who marries a
Basket;....."
I also copied Thomas Jefferson Russell's will that show William Cate was
disinherited. The will is dated 2 Feb, 1882. (William, son of Low Cate of
the 1870 census would have been 21 in 1882.)
3. I copied information from Sketches of Tennessee Pioneer Baptist
Preachers, by UJ Burnett, gives some history of the Russell family. John
Russell was born in Ireland left there during times of persecution and fought
in the Revolutionary War. His son was William Russell born in Virginia,
migrated to Georgia then SC, then to Tennessee. William's son was Thomas
Jefferson Russell, born in Wilkes County Georgia, married Ms. Jennie Green
whose father was a native of Scotland. James Sterling Russell was the son of
Thomas J. Russell and Jennie Green.
James Sterling Russell married Ms. M. C. Cate, daughter of Gideon Cate.
4. There is some confusion about Riley's name. Was it Riley, or Urile, or
what? Family in Texas have called him Riley, and UJ. Two of his son's had
U. Riley Jonathan Cates as their father name on the applications for their
social security number.
I know that my great grandfather, Riley Cates, of Texas, was born in
Tennessee, married Callie Watson in Tennessee before he moved to Texas. And
I think that the above information supports the theory that Riley Cates is
also Riley Cate, son of CC Cate and Lutitia Russell.
Please let me know what you think.
David
