Everett W. Cates - One of the dominant figures in the business affairs
of Thomasville (NC), Everett W. Cates was a merchant and furniture
manufacturer. he was one of the founders of the Standard Chair Company,
and was later a partner in Cates and Boggs.
He was a native of Danville, VA and was born may 13, 1859, son of
Peter Clark and Margaret Elizabeth (ADAMS) Cates. He was a direct
descendant of JOSHUA Cates, who emigrated from England to America in
1715, locating in North Carolina as a member of the Elizabeth City
Colony. Peter Clark Cates was born in Hillsboro, NC on Jan. 15, 1824 and
died at Thomasville on May 7, 1903. He was a leader in establishing the
public schools in this town. Spending the early years of his career in
his native Virginia community, he came to Thomasville in 1861 and for
the time was engaged in shoe manufacturing. He later entered the
mercantile business under the firm name of P.C. CATES and SON, and
headed the organization until 1890 when he retired. On Feb. 25, 1846 he
married Margaret Elizabeth Adams, who died in 1907. The couple became
the parents of two children: HARRIET HUNT CATES and EVERETT WALLACE
CATES.

On June 26, 1889, Everett W. CATES married Miss Blanche Bailey
Pendleton, who was born in Margaretsville, daughter of Arthur Sylbert
and Amanda (Bailey) Pendleton. In the paternal line she is a direct
descendant of Biran Pendleton, a native of England and a colonial
settler in New England. Her maternal forebears included Massachusetts
families, the CHAPINS and DAYS. Mrs. and Mrs. Cates became the parents
of two children: MARGARET PENDLETON CATES who married Meade Botts HITE
and EVERETT W. CATES, JR., who was a veteran of WW I and who died in
1947.
Everett W. Cates, Sr. died in Florida on Nov. 24, 1937.
