Subject: Cate descendants to honor ancestors
The third Sunday each May has long been "Decoration Day" for
the cemetery
in Jefferson County, TN, commonly known as "Baldwin Cate." James Baldwin
Cate, after whom the cemetery is called, was the son of James and Elizabeth
(Lindsey) Cate and grandson of pioneer Dumplin Valley settler John Cate,
Sr.
This year, descendants will erect a 6 foot long, 4 foot high granite marker
on the graves of Baldwin and Sarah (Davis) Cate with a unique tribute: it
contains the descendancy of three children of James and Elizabeth through
the second generation (grandchildren of James and Elizabeth). Most of
these people are buried at the cemetery, and most are unmarked.
Some of the other surnames directly associated with this marker are Koontz,
Hill, Bailey, Smith, Ballard, Crawford, Johnston, Foster, Vents, Odom,
Underwood, Pollard, Snyder, Bolin, Nelson, Hickman, Solomon, and Brooks.
The Baldwin Cate Trust Fund was established as a donation source for anyone
who would like to help offset the enormous cost of this marker.
If you wish to obtain more information about the cemetery or the marker
project, please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to J. W. Foster,
Jr., 2052 Raven Road, Morristown, TN 37814 (phone 423-586-6898).
