While you may well be correct, there is always the possibility that it is
"prostitute"! I've seen that many times on census records and it was
definitely "prostitute"! In fact have seen one case where the censustaker
was very meticulous in listing the occupations of the inhabitants on a
certain town street, well known for its "entertainment establishments". All
the women were listed as prostitutes with the exceptions of the
"establishment" owners who were given the occupation of "madam".
Recently a local genealogical society had a program on the infamous "red
light district" in Florence, AL in the 1920-40 period. From what I heard
about the program, it was well documented.
