I'm not sure of its origin. I do "know" that 4 brothers (I think there were
4) came here from England. Their last name was supposedly CATE. I'm not sure
of the family history, but at least 2 went to North Carolina.
I've noticed on several census sheets the names have been spelled CATE,
CATES, KATE, KATES, and sometimes even CAVE or CATHEY.
So when doing research, its smart to check out all these names in the census
information.
Looking through the microfilm of the local LDS center for the Quaker church
in Orange Co., NC, I found the last name spelled CASE.
That was a real eye opener.
Anyway, hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will be able to answer
your excellent question.
