Hi,
I am puzzling with my HILLs in a couple of ways -- any and all input
welcomed!
The following family occurs in the 1880 Howell Co MO census:
#25-25 West Plains
HILL
William, w-m-m, 42, stock dealer, PA PA PA
Mary, w-f-m, 38, wife, housekeeper, OH OH OH
Mary, 14, dau, at school, IL PA OH
Minnie, 11, dau, at school, IL PA OH
Ella, 5, dau, at home, IL PA OH
As you see, the three daughters were born in IL. Two of the daughters
married into the STORY family, which moved from White Co IL to southern MO
and northern Ark. Last night I ran across a note I had taken from a DeBOAR=
D
sourcebook: "William T. HILL and his wife, Mary Elizabeth DeBOARD moved to
Howell County shortly after Mary Elizabeth's brother, Iva Gerome DeBoard
moved down there."
Do any of you HILL of IL researchers have any clues to offer that might he=
lp
me to determine if the HILL family in the census is from White Co? And if
Mary, the mother in the census, might be Mary Elizabeth DeBOARD?
The birth dates of William T. HILL and Mary Elizabeth DeBOARD do not
completely match those of William and Mary HILL above -- but are within a
few years, and you know the census! Also, I had believed that Mary Elizabe=
th
DeBoard was born in McMinn County TN, whereas the census seems pretty clea=
r
about Ohio.
The dates and birthplaces are enough to put me off of this idea. BUT - the=
re
is no other William and Mary HILL in this area, and the DeBOARD research
clearly indicates that William T. HILL and Mary Elizabeth DeBOARD moved to
Howell Co after her brother. Also - a William and Mary, from IL, with two
daughters who married into White Co IL families. Rather a lot of
coincidence?
Thanks,
Janis

The Cold Plague struck White Co., Il in 1820, and almost all died who
was sickened by it. No one knew how to treat it, and many citizens fled
from the county to avoid its formidable ravages.
