Bates County, Spruce Twp. R.W. Andrews, b. 10 Jan 1816 in TN, s/o W.G. and
Nancy (Graham) Andrews (b. VA, NC, resp.). 1840 went to Polk County MO.
Married Mar 1842, Amanda Cates d/o Ransom Cates, a native of NC. In 1863 went
to Cooper County, MO, to Saline County, MO, and in Spring 1868 to Bates
County, MO. Children were Lizzie, William L., Ann Eliza, Anice A., Rebecca
A., R.G., and Henrietta. Amanda Cates Andrews died 13 Dec 1878.
Letter from George F. Hooper, Secretary, Historical Society of Polk County,
MO, 1986 stated: "Ransom Cates came here around the year of 1833 or shortly
thereafter. He was part owner of a water-powered grist mill, the first in the
county, and in 1836 was known as the Campbell and Cates "old mill." Ransom
came from NC to TN, some of his children being born in NC, TN, and MO. In the
1840 census he had two daughters between the ages of 15 and 20, neither of
which are living with him in 1850. His was the only Cates family in Polk
County until the 1860 census. . . . Ransom's partner in the mill, Ezekiel
Campbell, came from Maury County, TN."
