Thought I would share this with the list. I received this information in
relation to another family. It is an abstract of a Newberry Co., SC Equity
case, reference Box 8, Package 21 Entitled Asai CATES, Aaron CATES, Robert
COOPER and wife Betsey vs Curtis B. ATWOOD, Abel H. POPE, John BAUSKET, and
Robert DUNLAP. Bill for discovery, injunction and relief. Filed 23 Jan
1824.
"Robert CATES had died intestate 22 Sep 1820 leaving his widow Sarah and
nine children: Jehu, Asai, Aaron, Nancy (married Jacob DUN), John S.,
Polly, Betsy (married Robert COOPER), and Robert T. CATES. The widow Sarah
CATES and son Robert T. CATES were administrators. Robert, Robert T. and
John S. CATES had been in the mercantile business .. R. T. CATES and Co. ..
the surviving partners had failed to make accounts. Previous court of
Equity in 1821. R. T. CATES and John S. CATES had left the state. They had
many debts and the sheriff had taken over some of the property."
This was all that was printed. Taken from "Newberry Co. Sc Equity Records
1818-1844" by Sandra J. Lee.
The Abel H. POPE listed as one of the defendants is thought to be the same
Abel H. POPE who died in Lauderdale Co., TN in 1843. He had married
Clarissa H. DAVENPORT. Clarissa H. is thought to have been a sister to my
gggg-grandmother, Martha J. DAVENPORT LINVILLE, thus my interest and the
reason a cousin had shared this information with me.
Hope it will help some of you on the CATES list.
