This may be a goofy question for you, but what does the math,
"45 from
110"
mean? This is entirely new to me, and I'd appreciate your help.
Okay, what I meant here was that the Richard Cate who I believe is the
son of Richard & Emelia Cate and appears on the 1810 Census at age 26-45
could not have been born before 1765. Take the optimum census age of 45 from
1810. I believe some of us may have that he was born circa 1768. I believe
Roberta posted this line last year along with that of the Richard Cate &
Elizabeth Unknown. She too stated that she did not believe that the Richard
Cate who died in 1806 was the son of Richard Cate son of Robert "Captain"
Cate as you seem to believe. See the Cate List Archives for these posts.

I'm not sure where or how your mention of Thomas "Hatter" Cate comes
into
any of this.
Thomas was Richard's brother, also a son of Richard & Emelia. Basically, I
was trying to come up with a scenario for the land exchange you had
quoted,
thinking perhaps Richard transferred ownership to his brother Thomas
that
he
had received from his father.
Charlie... can't agree here either... I am sorry. Tommy the Hatter was
the son of Thomas "Road" Cate. Thomas "Road" was the brother of
Richard who
married Emelia thereby making Tommy the Hatter Richard's nephew.
The Richard who married Elizabeth Unknown I will now name after my own
fashion as the Richard Cate of Eno & Little Rivers. I have deed citations
that shows he lived in this area... not Cane Creek where the Richard of
Robert "Captain" Cate lived. This seems to also be evident in the 1800
Census citations whereby Richard of Eno is listed next/near sons Abner & John
on pages 612 & 613 and the Richard of Robert "Captain" is listed on or about
page 554 as you cited. I believe Richard of Eno was born sometime between
1724 and 1744. There are some I have found who believe that Elizabeth's, his
wife, maiden name was "Smith" a contraction of the name "Messer Smith"
and
whose father was Conrad Messersmith of Person County. I hope to find someone
or some information that will verify this.
It is my contention the Richard of Eno & Little Rivers was the son of
Benjamin Cate Sr., son of Robert "the shoemaker" Cate. Note that a
"Richard
Cate, brother" is cited as follows:
2 Dec 1798 - Orange County, North Carolina Will Book C, Page 136. -
Benjamin Cate's will names wife, Mary; sons: John, Timothy, Jesse, James,
William; and daughter, Mary (under age); to Henry Hunt's oldest son, Elijah
Hunt; to David Nutt's oldest son, John Nutt. Executors: Richard Cate,
brother, and William Cain, merchant. Witnesses: William Cate, Alexander
McMullan and Edward Wortham.
Obviously this Benjamin could not be construed to be Benjamin "the
idiot", son of Richard & Amelia Cate who never married and whose father made
somewhat elaborate provisions for in his will in 1793... see the Cate Mail
List Archive for a full account of this Will by Louise L. This Benjamin is
to my, and I believe others, belief the son of Benjamin Cate Sr., son of our
founding father, Robert "the shoemaker" or as some say "the Virginian"
Cate.
The other executor of this estate, William Cain, is I believe, mentioned also
in the deed citations for Richard Cate of Eno and other Cains as well...
probably of his ilk. Deed citations for Benjamin Cate Sr. show that he too
was located in the Little River area of Orange County.
I do not have a good reckoning of all the children of Benjamin Cate Sr.
Dr. Cates file for him, the one I have, does not appear to list them and the
last entry is for 1765 I think. I believe the Benjamin who died in 1798 and
the Richard of Eno to be two of them. I think Bettye Heinrich has posted in
the past that Lazarus Cate was a son also. Does anyone have a listing of the
children of Benjamin Cate Sr. that they can share with us?
By the way... my line is down from Delilah Cate, wife of Gibson Manard
Jr. and daughter of Charles Cate Sr., son of Robert "Captain" Cate.
All for now...
