<< If you are saying that the Richard Cate who died in about 1806 was the son
Richard & Emelia Cate, I don't agree with that. >>
Yes, I was saying that.
I went to the study I did of the 1800 Orange Co, NC census. This census was,
or course, prior to the death of (some) Richard Cate who died after March 26,
1806. This death date is supposedly that of Richard Cate "Jr" (added for
clarity), son of Richard Cate "Sr" who married Emelia "Milly" Smith.
Richard
Cate "Sr" had already passed on by 1800. I was reviewing my file, using the
census work (which was a compilation of wills, deeds, trees, e-mail and
census data) that I worked on.
Portions of the 1800 census work-up I did is below:

Emilia, and Benjamin.

1810 Orange County Census - RICHARD CATE 26-45, 2 females 16-26, 1 slave.
If this is the same Richard Cate as Richard Cate "Jr," this age grouping
would still apply, if we assume the birth date of 1755 for this particular
Richard Cate is correct.
There was another Richard Cate that married Mary Unknown and died in 1818.
His children (I think) were Richard, Sarah, Martha and Robert, Jr. I do not
have any birthdates for these children. My source was Lpietrus(a)aol.com.
Having two females in the family aged 16 to 26 confuses me. I would assume
one would be the wife, and if that's the case, this Richard Cate might be
closer to the 26 age group than the 45 age group. OR he could be a widower OR
his home would be shared by 2 sisters?? The other Richard Cate that married
Mary Unknown predeceased his wife by 7 years. (The Richard Cate that was the
son of Robert L. Cate & Lucy Unknown.) We have no date for his birth.
I have not started the breakdown of the 1810 census data, so I feel a little
stupid right now, sorta writing my thoughts down without all the facts : )

28 Aug 1810 - RICHARD CATE conveyed to Thomas Cate his right to certain
negroes via the will of Richard Cate given to Benjamin Cate & Milly Cate wife
of Richard, deceased, and to be divided at their death to the other children
of Richard. Witness: Thomas Brewer.
Ok. My first response was, are we talking about 3 Richard Cate's?? Or does it
say:
Richard Cate Sr's son, Richard Jr. gave to Thomas ("Hatter") Cate, his
brother, his ownership to certain negroes he got by way of his father's will,
so that would definitely put a question mark against the 1806 date of death.
So we're back to which Richard died in 1806? The reason I'm asking this is
because of the information below.

In my opinion, some of us have confused the families of Richard & Amelia
Cate and that of Richard Cate & Elizabeth unknown.
Richard Cate, who married Elizabeth Unknown, as far as I've been told : ) is
the son of Richard and Emelia (Milly) Cate. But you're right, it is very
possible that Richard Cate who married Elizabeth may not be Richard Cate "Jr"

The Mary Cate who married Thomas Hunt does appear to me be the daughter of
Richard Cate & Elizabeth Unknown. I am not sure of her birth date. Little
work if any has been done on this Mary Cate. Her brothers, John, Abner &
Ephraim, and sister, Nancy, who married Thomas Dossett, people know more
about. John, Abner & Nancy who married Thomas Dossett are found in Hopkins
County, KY.
We got this:
Jean-monniejean(a)aol.com:
Mary Cates married William Hunt in Estill Co, KY, November 10, 1825. Margaret
Hunt was born August 11, 1843 in Madison Co, KY. William Hunt poss born VA,
Mary Cates Hunt born NC. Family bible gives father's name as Richard.
Margaret was baby of the family & had brothers & sisters.
Richard Cate "Sr's" will noted his children as:
February 1794, Richard CATE's will probated naming 9 children: James, Jesse,
Richard, Thomas, John, Martha Hastings, Susan(n)ah, Emilia and Benjamin.
Richard Cate "Jr's" will (or SOME Richard) noted his children as:
Children from Will Book D304, dated March 26, 1806, Proved May Court 1806:
Abner, John, Ephraim, Mary (HUNT), Nancy (DOSSETT). These are the ones I
deleted from Richard Cate Jr & Elizabeth Unknown, along with any reference to
Elizabeth) because the dates weren't working correctly based on Richard's
date of birth information (1755) I had received from others. You had stated
his birth date as about 1774.
I think the problem for me really lies with this birth and marriage
information I received:
Richard Cate "Sr" and Emelia "Milly" Smith had these kids. They were
married
about 1752. (all dates by others)
Richard Cate Jr - about 1755
James - about 1765 (Notice this 10-year gap??)
Martha E - January 29, 1767
Jesse - before 1774
John - between 1775 - 1780
Thomas "Hatter" Cates (Sr) - 1776
Susannah - about 1778
Emilia - about 1783
Benjamin - about 1784
Your date of 1774 seems likely, which would mean in 1800, he would be 26
years old, but would NOT be the Richard Cate that I noted as Richard Cate
"Jr," on the 1800 census breakdown, because he has a wife 45 & up and
wouldn't have children these ages:
Page#
554 Richard CATES, age of 26 and under 45
Wife, age of 45 and up
Son# 1, age of 16 and under 26
Daughter #1, age of 16 and under 26
1 Slave
Perhaps this is the Richard that married Mary Unknown and had 4 children, 2
girls & 2 boys?
However, if he was born in 1755, 3 years after his parents were married, this
data would indeed "fit," because of his proximity to his brothers and his
mother. I think we all need clarification of who died in 1806. It is pretty
darn confusing, all right : )
