Looking for parents of Martha Daniel Cates who lived in the Fort
Deposit area of Lowndes and Butler County, Alabama. She was born c.
1787 d.c. 1881 in that same area. The Alabama census gives NC as her
place of birth, but she may have been born in SC.
According to a rejected War of 1812 Widow's Pension application c.
1880 she was 93 years old, had been married to John Cates about 1815 in
Edgefield District, South Carolina. Wedding Ceremony performed by Rev.
Deloach. Her name at marriage was Martha Daniel. Claimed service was
possible for that area of S.C., officers, etc. correct, but rejected
because John Cates' name was not found upon the rolls of the South
Carolina militia. She was probably not his first wife.
The Cates lived in that section of eastern Edgefield District now in
Saluda County, S.C. along Cloud's/Cloudy Creek in what is now the Ridge
Spring/Monette area. They migrated to Alabama c. 1823. A cousin in
Alabama thinks some of the Daniels family came to that area of Alabama,
too. Some later genertions of the Cates family were reported to be
buried in a now lost Daniel's graveyard, maybe destroyed by road
construction.
Does anyone have information on a William Daniel or Jesse Daniel who
were witnessing deeds in Orangeburg in 1775 &1776 or a Chesley and
Judith Daniel who were selling land in Edgefield in 1789. They were
listed as of Granville Co., NC but land had been purchased by them by
deed in 1774.
In 1790 a James Daniel witnessed a deed for Watson on Cloud's
Creek. A James Daniel was an adjacent landowner to Watsons and Pringle
on Cloud's Creek in 1786.
Thank for your assistance.
