There are a lot of Cates in Burl Underwood's book "The Underwoods" and
indeed there were a lot of Underwood-Cate marriages in East Tennessee. Here
is one that has me a little puzzled. For those of you that may have Burl's
book it is from the second edition, p. 232 at the top of the page.
(begin quote)
4H. Sussanna Underwood, b. Dec. 10, 1829; d. Apr. 5, 1877 William Cate; b.
Aug. 10, 1893, d. Apr. 28, 1884. They "went west" according to her niece,
Ann Underwood Cate, possibly to Appansose County, Iowa.
(end quote)
There is a footnote reference to Our East Tennsessee Kinsmen, p. 8 Part II
by Aurelia C. Dawson.
There is an obvious typographical error with William Cate born after he
died. But even making allowance for the typographical error, I can't figure
out who this William Cate might have been nor what his correct dates might
have been.
The Sussanna Underwood in question was the daughter of Enoch Underwood and
Nancy Underwood, first cousins who married. So it is not just the Cates
where this happened. My Underwood line is Sussanna's brother William Ramey
Underwood, and I am trying to research at least the siblings and their
spouses of all my direct ancestors.
I have a Calloway Cate in my database, b. 20 Aug 1828 in Jefferson County
TN, d. 11 Jan 1876 in Appanoose County, Iowa, m. 1849 in Appanoose County to
Susan Underwood. I do not have parents for this Susan Underwood.
I am guessing that Appansose County and Appanoose County are the same
county. I am also guessing that Calloway Cate and William Cate were closely
related (possibly even the same person -- William Calloway Cate???).
Also, I can't figure out who Susanna's niece, Ann Underwood Cate might have
been.
Can anybody sort this out? Thanks in advance.
Jerry Bryan
