Jerry,
The Burl Underwood citation is pretty confusing and most likely=20
erroneous. The William Cate cited is William Cate son of Samuel Cate &=20
Barbara Wilhite. I have his birth date as being 30 Aug 1803 and death being=
=20
28 Apr 1884. However there are differing opinions on his birth and death=20
dates and place of death. He is buried in Denney Cemetery in Taylor=20
Township, Appanoose County, Iowa. William Cate was married to Susannah=20
Locke, not Susannah Underwood as you have noted.
Aurelia Cate Dawson said the following in her book, "Our East Tennessee=20
Kinsmen":
"From Jefferson County, Tennessee, the William Cate family moved to=20
Sevier County, Tennessee. In 1848 they became one of the early settlers of=20
Iowa, settling first in Van Buren County and in 1849 moved to Appanoose,=20
County, Iowa." (Aurelia Cate Dawson)
Census records show the following:
1830 Federal Census for Jefferson County, Tennessee, Page 326, Line=20
1296 - William Cate age 20-30, 1 male age under 5 (This would be Calloway=20
Cate); 1 female age 20-30, 1 female age under 5 (This would be Nancy Cate wh=
o=20
later marries Sterling Rose).
9 Dec 1850 - 1850 Federal Census for Taylor Township, Appanoose=20
County, Iowa, Pages 43B & 44, Dwelling 12, Family 12 - William Kate, farmer=20
age 46, Susan age 45, Samuel, farmer age 20, Eli, farmer age 17, Priscilla=20
age 16, Eliza age 13.=20
1860 Federal Census for Taylor Township, Appanoose County, Iowa, Page 81=
,=20
Dwelling 556, Family 529 - Wm. Cate, farmer age 55, Susan Cate age 54, Oran=20
Whicker age 10, Jas. Y. Rose age 4, Samuel Rose age 3, Alexander Chambers,=20
farm laborer age 16, Mary Parson, domestic age 16.=20
It is my belief that the Susannah Underwood you mention in your note is=20
actually the Susan Underwood who married Calloway Cate who is a son of the=20
above William & Susannah Locke Cate. Census records for Calloway show the=20
following:
9 Dec 1850 - 1850 Federal Census for Taylor Township, Appanoose County, Iowa=
,=20
Page 44, Dwelling 13, Family 13 - Calloway Kate, farmer age 22, Susannah age=
=20
20, Malinda age 1/12.=20
1860 Federal Census for Taylor Township, Appanoose County, Iowa, Page 81=
,=20
Dwelling 553, Family 526 - Calaway Kate, farmer age 32, Susan age 30, Malind=
a=20
age 10, Joan age 6, Nelson B. age 3, Wm. A. age 5/12.
Note that Calloway was living next door to his father, William, in 1850.
As to who Ann Underwood Cate was?=E2=80=A6. at this point not exactly su=
re=20
myself=E2=80=A6 maybe someone else will enlighten us here. I would also lik=
e to know=20
if anyone has the lineage of the Preston Underwood who appears time and agai=
n=20
with the Cate family in Appanoose County. Burl Underwood does not have him=20
nor have I seen his lineage anywhere else. I believe he was a fellow=20
traveler from East Tennessee. Thanks.
