I descend from an Isaac Cate (son of John Cate) who wed Susannah
Manard and had a child Martha "Patsy" Cate.
The big problem is that I don't know which John was Isaac's father.
Tom:
While I can't prove it beyond all doubt, I'm reasonably sure that John is
the son of Charles Cate, Sr. and Sarah Baldwin. He appears adjacent to
Charles Cate in the 1790 census in Wilkes County, NC, and just a few entries
away from his father-in-law Gibson Manard. His move to Jefferson County,
Tennessee and joining the Dumplin Baptist Church occurs at about the same
time as Charles and Sarah's. John and wife Betsy Manard moved on to McMinn
County at about the same time as Charles Cate, Jr., his probable brother,
and lived at Big Spring, which is also where Charles, Jr. lived. There were
other marriages of Charles, Sr.'s descendants with Manard family members,
multiple land deeds between them. Charles, Sr. gave an affidavit in 1786
that his son John was not old enough to pay poll tax, so he clearly had a
son with that name.
None of this adds up to proof, but the proximity to Charles Sr.'s family in
Wilkes County, Jefferson County, then McMinn County combined with the Manard
connection and Charles having a son named John seem to add up.
