I have been working on my Cate family history and I'm having trouble
finding my Cate line.
My G.G.G. Grandfather is unknown. We believe there were four sons and
maybe more. They were. Sirruden Bangs Cate, Henry Cate, Lorenzo Cate
and William Cate.
Sirruden Bangs Cate:
Have no birthplace of Parents or children (being Dutch=Parents or
earlier ancestors may have settled first in New England area where other
immigrants from Holland settled). My Mother has been told of a story
passed down in the family that Great-Grandfather Sirruden Bangs Cate was
born on a very stormy night in a sod house (Home later Built) on the
Prairie, ? Illinois (possibly Wis.). A man, a complete stranger, was
traveling horseback on his way further West, he stopped and asked the
Cate family if he could stay the night with them on account of the
storm. When the baby boy was born that night, the stranger asked if the
baby could have his name as he had no family and he said he would like
to know that someone would have his name=so=thats how Great-Grandfather
became Sirruden Bangs Cate.
? Could the mans name have been Sirruden Bangs or Sir Ruden Bangs?
Another story is as follows:
Sirruden drove a herd of cattle to Chicago, Illinois.
The other 3 brothers got into an argument on the family farm while he
was doing this. They sold the farm Land (either in Illinois or
Wisconsin) and when Sirruden got back, he discovered they had left to
parts unknown to this day, taking the money from the sale of the farm
as their share and leaving Sirruden the money from the sale of the
cattle as his share.
(My thoughts-being as he met and married Malvina R. Lane in Syracuse,
New York, I wonder if maybe he knew of relatives there and went to live
or visit them after his brothers disappeared and then after marrying
evidently moved back to Prairie area of his birth or at least close to
it)
Notes for Malvina Rachel Lane:
