Charlie & Ray,
Its been some time but I have exchanged with both of you before. No,
this Cate family is not part of my direct line which is down from Charles
Cate & Sarah Baldwin. But since my Cate-Manard family lived on/near Dumplin
Creek along with that of John Cate Sr., I collect and research all the Cate
lines that were in Jefferson County, Tennessee. These being to my notion the
families of John Cate Sr., William Cate Sr., Charles Cate Sr. and the Richard
Cate who was married to Elizabeth Tharp.
Generally speaking the Jefferson County families did not add the "s" on
their name but there are exceptions, especially when the descendants moved
away to other parts of the country. Ray's family does not use the "s" and
one should always take what the census taker had placed down with a grain of
salt. There is considerable thought and evidence that many of the Southern
Cate lines regardless of the spelling are related. So, I do not discriminate
when I am looking for new entries for my database.
Thanks to both of you for giving us information on the Saline County,
Arkansas branch of the family descended from John Cate Sr.
