Charlie:
I am a direct descendant of William Cate in Orange County N.C.. His daughter
Hannah Cate m William Berry in 1799 in Orange County. She had two sisters and two
brothers. I know William died around 1803 because I have a copy of the sale list
of his estate. The Berry and Cate families are intermarried several times in
Orange County N.C. I have a lot of information about Hannah as she was my
ggggrandmother. Her brothers were John Cate, and Benjamin Cate. Her sisters were
Charity and Sarah Cate. Her mother was Elizabeth. Hannah was born in 1770 and
died in 1858. The South Carolina Cate that I know about is is William Cate/Cates
married Sallie Berry in Orange County and removed to South Carolina in the
1820's. The Cates connection I have on the other side of my mothers family was a
John Cates/Cate m Charlotte (Lotty)Wilson and may have died in Crockett County
Tenn. I would be very interested in any Orange County information. Ben

Thanks for responding, Roberta. As for Mr. Joseph up there, you, me, and
several dozens of cousins would like to solve that one.
I had done the 1800 census for Orange Co NC, citing each Cate/Cates child and
adult on the census that I could identify, based on information from Dr.
Cates' wills and documents, along with members' e-mails. I will be working
on the 1810 census in the same manner next. There were a lot more cate/cates
then, I'll tell ya! Anyway, we'll be specifically looking for those folks out
there that have ended their search in NC, searching for a tie back to the
"original" Cate family from VA. We're all related, from what I can tell,
they
just went different directions : )
I am curious about the SC Cates, and if I find the time, I want to explore
that avenue too, to determine where their roots originated.
