Carolyn, that sentence stopped me dead in my tracks. My grandmother, Bessie
Ann Cates, had a brother named Otis. He was one of 10 children born to Edward
J. Cates and Helen Kurtz. I have no date of birth for him, and added him to
my list, because my grandmother mentioned his name.
Grandma passed away in March, and I've been given some boxes of her stuff to
go through. I've found her marriage license to John Monroe Phillips, which
was assumed lost forever, and a list she made of her brothers and sisters,
with their birthdates. I'll have to find it again.
Since Edward J. Cates was born in MO, son of Thomas Jefferson Cates, born MO,
son of Joseph Cates, born NC, I know this isn't the same Otis Cates as the
one in my family, but still it stopped me dead in my tracks : )
Thanks for sharing this historic information with all of us on the list.
