Hello Group,
I had forward the e-mail to the list from Carolyn Stewart about Sister Mary
Frances Cates speaking to her family, below is the reply from Sister Mary
Frances Cates.
Debbie Oxford Long
Thanks for forwarding the comment. Yes, I actually spoke with her father
and
some others years ago. They all claimed kin to the Crockett County Cates'
but I have not found a connection. Their family came much later than ours.
There are six groups of Cates' in that area and we have not gotten a
connection. Most came from what is now the area of Orange Co., NC. The
confusions is our group came from Person County, NC which was originally
part
of Orange County. Robert Cates a brother to my John settled in what is now
Orange County and John, his brother settled in what is now Person County,
NC.
This Otis talked about their Aunt Suk came in a covered wagon in 1860s and
saw them building Nashvillle. I just missed Aunt Suk as she had just died.
My people came in 1830s and my Charles H. Cates came with his wife's family,
the Wilsons.
He was the only Cates from his family. Hope I haven't confused you.
Love, Sister Mary Francis

Carolyn, that sentence stopped me dead in my tracks. My grandmother,
Bessie
Ann Cates, had a brother named Otis. He was one of 10 children born
to
Edward
J. Cates and Helen Kurtz. I have no date of birth for him, and added
him
to
my list, because my grandmother mentioned his name.
Grandma passed away in March, and I've been given some boxes of her stuff
to
go through. I've found her marriage license to John Monroe
Phillips, which
was assumed lost forever, and a list she made of her brothers and sisters,
with their birthdates. I'll have to find it again.
Since Edward J. Cates was born in MO, son of Thomas Jefferson Cates, born
MO,
son of Joseph Cates, born NC, I know this isn't the same Otis
Cates as the
one in my family, but still it stopped me dead in my tracks : )
Thanks for sharing this historic information with all of us on the list.
