Hi All, we now have 80 Cate subscribers. Let's all put our lines on

Here is my Cate connection. I hesitate to state Mary's parentage because
I have found no hard proof and have seen her parents listed as several
different couples.
At this time, I lean toward Charles Cate Sr as her father. At the time
of her marriage in 1790 in Wilkes Co., NC, there were only two Cate
households, Charles and John. John Cate was bondsman at Mary's wedding
which would indicate a close relationship. In 1786 Charles Cate stated
in an affidavit that his son John was not old enough to pay a poll tax.
If John looked old enough to pay poll tax in 1786, four years later he
probably was an adult and could appear in a separate household in the
census and sign as a bondsman. The only Cate to appear in Wilkes County
Grantor and Grantee Index is Charles. He only appears in the Grantor
Index in the 1790's, apparently when he sold his land in Wilkes and
moved to Jefferson Co., TN. He must have purchased the land before
Wilkes was formed or received a grant from the State of NC. I haven't
had an opportunity to check this out, has anyone else? I, also, haven't
had a chance to check land records in TN for Charles. Has anyone done a
neighborhood study of the land records in Jefferson County, TN?
I've seen so many conflicting statements about Mary's family that I am
very suspicious of any information not backed by comtempory records.
BTW, does anyone know where the name Sarah as Charles' wife comes from?
I know that Baldwin comes from John Lawrence's 1850 letter (fifth
