Dear Judy,
I don't think there was anything infamous about the northern CATE/CATES
lines; it is simply that there are several of us who have had so many
problems with the family that went from VA to NC. There are so many Roberts
and Johns that things over the years have gotten rather confused.
Have you checked the publications of the New England Historic Genealogical
Society? I don't have their on line address, but bet someone on the list
probably does.
Many of us are familiar with the excellent town and township records of New
England states, many going back to the 1600's. The situation is far
different in the South, where you are lucky if the courthouse in the county
didn't burn somewhere along the way destroying all the records.
You said that Isaac married a woman from Clarksville, New Hampshire. Have
you checked the town records to see what is available? Where did Isaac and
Caroline get married? And where did Isaac die? I may be wrong, and I've
never had the occasion to research in New Hampshire, but I've seen
published records from various towns and townships and they were excellent.
Anyone have the address of the New England Historic Genealogical Society to
send to Judy?
Edgar

Was there something I should know about the New Hampshire Cates?
Everyone seems to be looking for Cates in the South and I'm beginning to
feel slighted!
I'm trying to find any information about Isaac Cate who was born July
14, 1821 and was married to Caroline May Young of Clarksville, New
Hampshire who was born July 7, 1826. They had 10 children: Charles,
Albert, Richerd, Phoebe, Alfred, Melinda, Frank, Richard, Isaac & Fred.
The mystery to us is regarding the elder Isaac who died on October 23,
1864. We can find no solid info on this line. Can anyone help?
Thanks! Judy Anderson
