I was checking 1880 Sevier County, Tennessee census entries and ran into one
I didn't recognize. (This is from a transcription)
Cate Albert 35
Betsey 36
Margaret 15
Sallie 13
Catherine 11
Perry L. 9
Ephraim 8
Alice 6
Malissa 4
O. Alexander 2
Mary 55
I have not yet done my due diligence on this family at the library, but I
think I can identify them based on online resources.
The LDS Web site has a marriage, Albert M. Cate to Ann E. Johnson, 22 Sep
1864, Sevier County, Tennessee, IGI batch M519681 (I consider the M batches
of the IGI quite reliable because they seem to consist simply of somebody
going to the courthouse and writing down all the marriages). I believe Ann
was Ann Elizabeth (Betsey) Johnson (see below).
The Rootsweb Web site has a GEDCOM with Albert McClain Cate b. 31 May 1847
in Sevier County, Tennessee, m. Betsy Ann Johnson, d. Blount County,
Tennessee.
ancestry.com has a GEDCOM for Albert Cate nee Albert McClain. It says that
he was the son of Mr. McClain and Mary Catherine Cate, with Mary Catherine
Cate in turn the daughter of Elisha Cate and Mary Elizabeth Newman. I have
Mary Catherine Cate, Elisha Cate, and Mary Elizabeth Newman in my data base.
But I do not have a spouse or children for Mary Catherine Cate. The
ancestry.com GEDCOM also that Albert changed his name from McClain to Cate.
Note that this information is consistent with Mary Cate age 55 from the
census entry being the mother of Albert Cate, with Mary Cate age 55 from the
census entry being Mary Catherine Cate daughter of Elisha Cate and Mary
Elizabeth Newman, and with Albert McClain Cate being born out of wedlock.
I wonder if anybody can confirm any of this information, and if anybody can
shed any light on the Mr. McClain purported to have had a child with Mary
Catherine Cate, and on the purported name change of Albert McClain to Albert
McClain Cate.
