Would anyone be interested in creating a formalized Cate/Cates family
association? We have most of the elements of an organization from other
projects, a registered Trade Mark, and web space, etc. Let me know if
you'd be interested by dropping me a note at:

He a former military person also. Thanks, Sister Mary Francis

Why do we need an association? seems to me that is money for something
we could be spending on further research. most associations i have seen
just block the progress of others doing research because of the money
that is needed to join the stupid association in the first place.
i'd rather keep it free and donate my money to DNA testing of those who
can't afford it and need to find their lines.
just my thoughts on this. i for one won't join if membership dues are
necessary.

There have been a number of ideas put forth for what a family
association
could do for example fund DNA studies and other research. Perhaps its' a
good idea for Y'all to think of what you'd like a family association to
do
and be if it were created?
Remember, we're just trying to see if there is enough interest at this
point.

Keep me informed. I would be very interested in a DNA study.
I saw in an encyclopedia awhile back, under the category "names," that
Cate
was derived from Katz, which was Hebrew for Kohen Tezedek, or in
English, "Most
Righteous Priest." We got a kick out of telling my maternal grandfather,
Laney Perry "Jack" Cate, that he was actually descended from Jewish
priests the
last few years of his life. (He always had a hook nose! LOL. But he
always said
he came from 3 brothers who came over from Ireland.)
Count me in,
Dave Smith

Have you ever done a location survey to see where all the Cate/Cates
descendents are now located? It might be interesting. Again, my maternal
grandfather
was a Cate, Laney P. "Jack" Cate. He was born (and died) in St. Clair
Co.
Alabama, and the best I can tell, was descended from the gentleman in
Eastern
Tennessee (I can't remember his name at the moment, but he is the main
Cate
ancestor around here, I think).
I now live in Shelby County, Alabama, have one sister, Sondra Moss, in
Shelby
Co., Alabama and one, Laura Eden, in St. Clair Co, AL. Jack's children:
Christa Smith, lives in St. Clair Co and Bill Cate, lives in Jefferson
Co, AL. All
these counties are in the Metro Birmingham area.
Thanks and good luck!
Dave Smith
