I've been reading all the information on the Thomas Cate families etc.
and wondered if anyone had seen anything yet on Richard Cate born about
1780 (according to census records in Virginia) who married Elizabeth
Tharp.
I am interested in any information you have about the Cates family of
northeast Texas. My grandfather, William Clarence Cates, was born 9/21/1909 in
Winnsboro, Texas. He married Jewel Emma Speck. Their children are Billy Ray
Cates and Patricia Ann Cates Helms.
Clarence's parents were W.R. (Billie) and Lemmie Keelin Cates. Billie Cates:
b. 3/11/1885 and d. 4/21/1917. Buried Harmony Cemetery near Winnsboro. Other
children of Billy and Lemmie were Felma, John Lewis, and R.C. Cates.
I don't have great information beyond this. I think Billy's parents were
William R. Cates b. Oct 1855 in Alabama and F.M. Jackson Cates b. Jan 1857.
Thanks,
Mike Cates
I have in my notes from a letter someone sent to me that Martha "Patsy" Sykes
was sister to Jean and Sylvia Sykes married to John and Bernard CATE. Has
this been proven to be untrue? If not this would help date some CATES as we
have information from the 1800 census on Thomas "Hatters" Cate and his wife
Martha "Patsy" Sykes.
Louise
Hi Folks,
A great deal of data pertaining to the CATE & CATES of Hillsborough
District, Orange County, and surrounding counties has been posted to the
list. My ancestry is also supposed to be decended from the Robert CATE of
Eng, VA & NC, but lived in SC and migrated from there to TN then to KY.
Is anyone researching the CATE & CATES of SC or could some give me ideas of
area to search in SC for my ancesters?
My lines supposedly goes like this:
Robert CATE of Eng
(Shoemaker)
James F. CATE of SC
(Carpenter & Farmer)
Robert D. CATES of SC lived near Shelbyville, (Bedford)TN in the
early 1800's. (Carpenter & Farmer)
Wilson G. CATES b NC lived near Shelbyville, Bedford, TN
moved to Muhlenburg, Co, KY in 1836 (Carpenter & Farmer)
John Green CATES I of Muhlenburg Co, KY
(Carpenter, Farmer, Inventor, & Merchant)
John Green CATES II of Logan Co, KY
(Carpenter, Farmer, Blacksmith, and Well Driller)
To date, I have found sketchie data pertaining to 4 Robert D. CATES and 2
Robert D. CATE from the areas around Hillsborough, Orange Co, NC and
surrounding counties, but no definite connection to my above CATE & CATES
lineage. Dr. Banks Cate speculates the Robert D. CATE that married Margaret
CARRIGAN in 13 Sep 1810 Orange Co, NC to be the Robert D. and Margaret CATES
in Weakley Co, TN on the 1840 Census to be the father of Wilson G. CATES b
11 Mar 1811 in NC.
I have not found any one of the Robert D. CATE/CATES with a son named
Wilson G. CATES. Nor have I found Wilson G. CATES listed on any records
prior to his 2nd marriage in Muhlenburg Co, KY in 1838.
In 1993 while visiting in Hillsborough and doing a little research, I could
not find any concrete information pertaining to the Robert D. CATES I am
searching for in the Historical Records rooom in the Public Library (Records
begin with Tax Rocords in 1770's and 1790 Census Rocords). I did find,
however, in the Court House in the old Records Books (dating back to late
1600's) in a Will book dated 1734, a Will with some of the heirs named
being, James F. CATE, John Sykes CATE, Joseph CATE, and William CATE. I ran
out of time and did not have an opportunity to research this further.
Does anyone have any information pertaining to this Will and the 4 CATE men
listed?
Any information pertaining to James F. CATE and his son Robert D. CATES
will be greatly appreciated.
Have a nice day,
Don Stanton

Charlie and all, it is not unusual, then or now or somewhere in between to
find large gaps in siblings. I have a sister 12 years younger than me!
Another 7 years younger. Even a twenty year gap is not that unusual. Just
the little bit I know. Ann
Ann, I agree, because I have a wonderful sister and brother that are 16 and 17
years younger than me, products of my mother's second marriage. Sylvia's mom
would have been about 43 years old at the time she was born, and 42 when John
Cate Sr was born. Two "change of life" babies? Their father would have been 55
and 56 years old. That's why I was wondering is Thomas wasn't married twice or
perhaps these two children didn't go with this particular Thomas. The only
information that I know of linking them to Thomas and Rebecca Sykes came from
that letter.
Now, my mom, who is descended from the CATES branch, had my little sister and
brother when she was about 34 and 35 years old, still young enough to bear
kids.
I'm not wanting to start a discussion regarding anything else other than
genealogy, but I don't know if a woman can have children when she's 43 and 44
years of age. (I'm female.)

I have read that letter before and it is very confusing, so who is "Patsy"?
If Barnard is son of Thomas and Rebecca Sykes then wouldn't the grandmother be
"Rebecca". Dates are very important so would like to get this straight.
Louise
Louise, I agree. After sending the e-mail, I started thinking about it, and
the age difference was still there. (The 22 year span between 2 sets of
children). I began to wonder if there was a second marriage, or if at least 2
of the children, namely
5+ John Cate Sr. b.c 1757 d. Oct 1828
6+ Sylvia Cate b.c 1758
had been attached to perhaps the wrong Thomas.
I'm going through the family reports and e-mails I've received, working on a
project and entering all the family information on the CATE/CATES into this
family tree, and of course, citing the sources. I'm hoping it will help
others, as well as myself, as I'm still searching for the father of my great
great grandfather, Joseph CATES.
Dr. Banks Cate Jr. has done an astronomical amount of work on the CATE/CATES
lineages, and I truly believe that without his input, a lot of us would still
be scrambling for answers.
Because there were so many Thomas's, Richard's, Robert's, etc., I'm sure it
got pretty confusing for him also.
As I go through, I've noticed some other information on other lines that
popped right out at me. Like a child being born when her father was only 9
years old. Obvious things like that.
Roberta has done a wonderful job too, sharing this information and answering
questions.
My self-imposed "job" is not to create confusion, and I'm not trying to do
that. We have enough from the lineage names as it is.
I'm going to continue on with my little projects on the CATE/CATES lines.
I'm still looking for links (as are a few other people who have e-mailed me)
for the CATE/CATES in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, and other
locations. I think that in a couple of situations, I have found their
ancestors' parents, but until I know or think for sure that my guesses are
correct, I will ask them to research it and make that determination
themselves.
So for now, I'm not going to question anything until my research has gone as
far as I can with what I currently have.
Your distant cousin...Charlie Ward
Hi All, that note that I made should have been deleted. That was when I
disagreed with Banks about the Barnards but I aligned my data with his.
Let's all work on this I'll start with JMD Cates & WC Cates pedigrees
with dates & see if anyone has any comments.
Joseph Marion Dixon Cates b. 5 Jul 1815 mar. 1st Ann P. Lyon
Thomas C. b. ca 1787 mar. Nancy Ann Cate 11 Jun 1814
Barnard Sr. b. ca 1735 mar. Jane (Jennie) Sykes
Thomas b. ca 1702 mar. Rebecca Sykes
Ribert & Ann
William Carroll Cates b. 13 Aug 1840 mar. Elizira J. Patterson
Joseph S. b 28 Sep 1812 mar. Sophia Himes
Thomas Sykes b. ca 1775 mar. Martha Hastings
John Sr. b. abt 1746 mar. Silvia Sykes
Thomas b. ca. 1702 mar. Rebecca Sykes
Robert & Ann
This is the way I read the 1886 letter.

I have just updated the obit section of my web page. These
are obits from the Machias Valley News and Observer a weekly
newspaper from Machias, Washington, Maine starting with
August 13, 1997. These obits cover many surnames from all
over Maine and the US so stop in and see if there is a
missing piece to your puzzle.
I only post the name of the deceased and their parents and
spouses (if listed) under the date it was published, I have
copies of all the obits listed so feel free to email me for
further information about an obit as they can contain very
useful genealogy information.
Stop in at http://members.home.net/ctyankee and follow the
link to the obits.

Here's the answer, right here, in the John CATE SR file:
1886 Letter from Rev. J. M. D. Cates, Cateston, Cannon Co. TN to W. C.
Cates, Shelbyville, TN. "Dear Kinsman, From what you wrote, I know
precisely who you are and where you came from. I came from Orange County
NC in 1834. I was raised in the same neighborhood that your grandfather
came from. Knew all of his brother and sisters and their children. I
knew JOHN CATES, your great grandfather. My grandfather was his brother.
His name was Bernard. My grandmother on my father's side was Jennie
Sykes before she was married, sister to your great grandmother, old aunt
Silvia Cates. My father was named Thomas and first cousin to your
grandfather Thomas Cates." 11 Feb 1886. 16 Apr 1886 A subsequent letter:
"Received a letter from B. F. Cates of Hernando Mississippi, he is a
grandson of Hatter Tommy Cates. His grandmother was Patsy Sykes, sister
of my grandmother." 16 Apr 1866. (Correspondence of Rev. Joseph Marion
Dixon Cates, McClung Collection, Lawson McGhee Library, Knoxville, TN)
>From the 1886 Letter of Joseph Marion Dixon Cates stating his
grandfather Barnard was the brother of John great grandfather of W. C.
Cates it appears that John is the son of Barnard Sr. & not Thomas &
Rebecca Sykes as given before. RBP
RE: THOMAS CATE FILE:
No will or other record of Thomas has been found.
Children:
3+ Thomas Cate Preacher b.c 1733 d.b Aug 1816
4+ Barnard Cate Sr. b. 1735 d. 1826
5+ John Cate Sr. b.c 1757 d. Oct 1828
6+ Sylvia Cate b.c 1758
Roberta stated:
Hi All, Louise pointed out that John Sr.'s birthdate of 1757 probably is
an incorrect date in the file I just put on the list.
The dates for the early Cate/Cates are guesstimates but on John Sr. his
birthdate would probably be more likely before 1746 if he was 21 in 1767
to own property.
Does anyone have a better date?
>>Just my two cents worth -- the dates of 1757 for John Cate Sr & 1758 for
Sylvia Cate would make them 22 years apart from their siblings, Thomas Cate
Preacher and Barnard Cate Sr. Even if you adjusted the date downward to 1746,
that would make them 11 years apart. The date of death for John Cate SR would
coincide with the death dates of his "brother" Barnard CATE, SR, but
definitely not his birth date. Perhaps the last two are NOT the children of
this Thomas Cate??<<
