Hello Fellow List Members,
I was priviledged to visit the Dumplin Cemetery in Jefferson County, TN today
and listed the following gravesites of Cates and many related family members
that I have come across in my own file. I am also attaching a picture of the
plaque placed at the Dumplin Cemetery in honor of John Cate, Sr. by the Sevier
DAR Chapter.
I hope someone finds something of interest ... and help here.

Dear Claude in AZ:
I read with interest your account of your family in Indian Territory,
in and around what is now Murray and Pontotoc Counties in Oklahoma. Part
of my Cates family migrated from Muhlenberg Co, KY, in about 1881/2 to
Denton Co, TX, then moved North to I.T. about 1895 from Jackson Co, TX,
and settled in Hickory, OK, Murray County. Here is part of what I have
on my Cates family:
John CATES (b. 1807 in NC, d. between 1870 and 1880 in Lafayette,
Macon Co, TN), married 1 Jun 1828 in Wilson Co, TN, to Alice
"Alley" JOHNSON (b. ca 1807 in Wilson Co, TN, d. after 1880 in
Macon Co, TN, father Jeremiah JOHNSON, mother Elizabeth). The
1850 and 1860 census records show John Cates and family in Wilson
Co, TN. The 1870 census shows the Cates family composed of John,
Alice "Alley," and two daughters (Arcadia and John Frances) in
Lafayette, Macon Co, TN. The 1880 census shows John's widow,
Alice "Alley," residing in Macon Co, TN, with a daughter,
Arcadia, and 6-year-old grandson John Wesley CATES (b. ca 1874).
John and Alice reared nine children:
1. Miranda C. CATES, b. c 1835; md. first William Ralston, two
children; md. second Elisha Jones, three children.
2. Joseph CATES, b. c 1837
3. William Henry CATES, b. 17 May 1842, Wilson Co, TN, d. 1912
Pittsburg Co, OK, md. 1868 in Muhlenberg Co, KY, to Martha
Ann BURGE; eight children.
4. Arcadia CATES, b. c 1842; two children.
5. Hewett CATES, b. c 1843
6. Martha CATES, b. c 1845
7. Josephine CATES, b. c 1847
8. Maria L. or Mariah CATES, b. 1849; md. Daniel H. Prock; two
or more children.
9. John Frances CATES (female) b. 1850
I am descended from the third child of John CATES and Alice
"Alley" JOHNSON, a son named William Henry CATES.
As you see, my William Henry Cates had a sister, shown in census records
as Martha Cates, born about 1847. Since the mother of William Henry and
Martha Cates was Alice "Alley" Johnson, it is possible that Martha's full
name was "Alice Martha Cates." Thus, she may be the wife of your Jack
Smith. I have no data whatever as to what happened to Martha Cates after
she is shown in the 1850 and 1860 census records of Wilson County, TN. Do
you have any census records from 1870 and subsequent years against which
you might verify a date of birth for your Martha as about 1847 in
Tennessee?
William Henry Cates (see above) married Martha Ann Burge in 1868 in
Muhlenberg Co, KY, and had some children. Their oldest child, a boy
named John Alice Cates (b. 1869 in Muhlenberg Co, KY) was my paternal
grandfather. Their next to the youngest child, a boy named James Clayton
Cates, was born in May of 1880 in Muhlenberg Co, KY. Their youngest
child, a boy named Hewett or Hewitt Newsom Cates, was born 1883 in
Denton, TX, following the move to Texas in which Martha Ann Burge Cates'
parents, her grandmother, and several of her siblings also moved to
Denton Co, TX. About 1895 (according to Martha Ann's application for a
pension as a widow of a veteran of the Civil War) William Henry and
Martha Ann (Burge) Cates moved to what is now Murray Co, OK. Also in the
town of Hickory (where Martha is buried) settled William Henry and
Martha's daughter, Fannie Fairest (Cates) Roe May, wife of Robert E. Lee
May. A relative of Martha Ann Burge Cates, Charles Goodall, also settled
in Hickory, Murray Co, OK.
Do any of these names sound familiar enough to consider that your Martha
Alice Kates may be a sister to my William Henry Cates?
I reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and have visited the little Hickory Cemetery
in which Martha Ann Burge Cates is buried (no marker) as are her
daughter, Fannie Fairest Cates Roe May, and members of Fannie's family,
in addition to Charles Goodall. I have been communicating with a
descendant of this Charles Goodall, a lady named Sharon R. Smith.
However, I doubt her Smith name would be related to yours.
Please let me know if you think it worth while pursuing the possibility
of there being a possible relationship between your Alice Martha Kates
Smith and my Martha Cates.
Sincerely,
Yvonne Cates Barton

In response to an inquiry regarding Quaker records in NC, the "Encyclopedia of
American Quaker Genealogy" by William Wade Hinshaw is an excellent source for
NC Quakers. It contains the records and minutes of 33 monthly meetings of the
North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends. I found the volume at my local
library, and i'm sure most larger libraries would have it.
You might also check the "Quaker Corner" at http://www.rootsweb.com/~quakers/
. I ordered some records from Jerry Richland through this site, and they
arrived promptly and were also quite reasonable.

I gave someone e-mail address for Ron, to get info on Sam CATES, I think their
name was maybe Margie?
When my computer crashed I lost his address. Would you please contact
me at dotbond(a)aol.com ?
Thanks,
Dot (CATES) Bond
Hello,
I joined this list last fall and was amazed to find a name that I
recognized on the list. Thanks to Gail Crabtree Dunn I have been able to
fill out many of the blank spaces. After some research to verify things I
have more questions and wondered if anybody recognized these names.
Samuel Cate b. 1805 (lived Knoxville Tenn. area)Married 1. Mahala Horne
(possibly from England. Had brother Riley Horne also Knoxville area.)
Children are
Thomas b. 1835 married Malissa Morris 1852 in Murray Co. GA
Miles G. b. 1838 possible other names Grundy and Felix
Mary R b. 1840 married a Mullins lived Tullahoma area
Mahala Clementine b. 1842 married M.R. Cobb lived Tullahoma area
James M. b.1843 Twin to Phoebe. Possible marriage in Jackson Co. AL to
Letha Brown.
Phoebe b. 1843 married Ben Reeves lived near Gadsden AL
Marshall Marion b. 1844. served CW Company B 4th AL Cavalry. Prisoner:
Rock Island Ill. lived near Tullahoma after war.
Samuel Cate marriage 2 Mary Jinkins (surname is questionable)
Miriam Loucinda b. 1848 married George Carbtree 1869 Jackson, AL
William R. b.1853 married Deby Jane Matthew, 1872 Jackson, AL
Ava Nola b. 1858 ?
Simon Gideon Nero b. 1860, Married Sarah Jane Reynolds, Rome Floyd, GA
Dec 1885. Lived in Rome area until death in 1945
The family has been documented by census in Murray GA 1850, Cherokee AL 1860
Jackson AL 1870
Samuel died shortly after the 1870 census and I suspect his 2nd wife had
died shortly before.
If anybody has suggestions for Samuel's parents, or anything about Mahala
Horne's family I would be glad to share what information I have.
Thanks,
Kathleen
RE: How many Cates mailing lists do we really need.
My vote: 1, I would also vote for Rootsweb due to its long history of serving
the genealogy community.
Can anyone give me information on the immigrant Joshua Cate, who was
mentioned as being this Richard Cates father. Richard was married to
Emelia? Smith and died Feb 1794. Children were James, Thomas, Jesse,
Richard, John, Emelia, Susannah, and Martha. I am descended from Martha
who married Henry C. Hastings, Jr. And then again I've also been told
that Captain Robert Cates is his father.
I would like to be able to put Richard's parents in my family tree.
Anyone that can help me?
Thanks all,
Carol
There are currently 3 CATES mailing lists:
cate-cates(a)onelist.com
cates(a)onelist.com
cate-L(a)rootsweb.com
How many do we really need? I've been asked to manage the cates(a)onelist.com,
and cate-cates(a)onelist.com is fairly new.
Please provide feedback to cccharlie1(a)aol.com
Thanks.
I heard about a Kates Kin newsletter, but was unable to locate a source
( library loan ?)...if anyone has info on this publication...please let
me know.
Thanks.

Charlie:
You might be in luck. The Dallas Public Library has a copy, and it appears
that they are a lender in our Interlibrary Loan Program. Do you want to
fill out an interlibrary loan application? If so, you ought to call and
give us the info over the phone. You may also stop in to fill one out.
Interlibrary loans typically take 2-3 weeks to receive. I am just telling
you that in advance in order that you will not get discouraged.
Thanks for your inquiry.

Charlie. . .
Nice to receive your inquiry. . .
It is my wife's family. . .
Thomas Cate/Cates, who married Nancy Bailiff, Orange Co, 7 April 1803.
Their children were: Israel, Rebecca, Richard S., and Jessie.
Then Richard S. Cate/Cates, who married Cornelia Jane Harvey,
in Tennessee. No data.
Not firm on Thomas Cate's parents. May have been Thomas (P) Cate and
Margaret Trousdale. He may have come from SC to NC. Looking for info.
She may have come from VA.
At some point Thomas and Nancy Cate moved to TN, where they died
ca 1830. No data on this.
Richard S. Cate purchased land, Scott Co, MO, 1837. In 1849, he
purchased land, Hickory Co, MO. Richard/Nancy and family arrived Burnet
Co, TX, 1852.
>From an ancestor of Israel Cate, she says that Thomas (P) Cate was the
first minister of the Cane Creek Baptist Church, ca 1878. However, just
this past December, I received a letter from the current pastor of Cane
Creek. He sent a draft of the church history, being written by one of
their members, who is also a university professor. From the draft, there
does not seem to be any connection between our Thomas Cate and the
church's Thomas Cate. (If this is of interest to you, will mail a copy.)
Will stop here. . . and see how you see the above. . . and if our lines
cross. I'm open to any help. . . and will send any info I may have.
Best of 1999 to you and family. . .
Stan Glaeser, San Antonio, TX

Folks, got this very nice response from Jeff Martin on these CATE/CATES lines.
Hope it helps someone. He didn't do a look-up or anything for me, but his name
was on the Orange Co NC board, so please don't diluge him with requests.
Thanks! Charlie

Charlie.. I am not a Cate descendant but have picked up quite a few from the
Orange/Chatham border area where my William Martin lived. Which of these are
you most interested? Do you see any Martins from this area in your data?

My computer crashed and I lost all my URL's, if any of you would be so kind
as to send me some, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dot
Bear with me while I tell you a story.
Have been trying for 20 years to help my mother find her roots. She has since
past away and I am still trying to find her family. Have gotten to the stage
that I am backtracking everything to see if a clue was disgarded as
insignificant. Anyway that leads me to the CATES list. On one document where
Richard SINNETT is giving his assurity that he can afford the marriage to Mary
CATES, there is a second signature that has me thinking. WILLIAM
COVENTRY(COVENTREE). William Coventry then shows up with the Polly (Cates)
and Richard Sinnett in Mercer County, KY. Curious and Curiouser.
Is there anyone out there who has a COVENTRY marrying a CATES? Does anyone
have a connection to the COVENTRY family? Candee
